My Dad (the man I admire most)

1

Dear Dad,2

I bet you never knew out of the choices I have, it's no contest when it comes to the man that I admire most.  I think it's time you really know what a wonderful parent you have always been.  Did you know that you are the sole reason I always try to treat every human being the same? As colored blind as person could possibly be given the constant negative influence of society. The impressive part of this is that you never had to beat it in to me. OK maybe once.  Seriously, you did'nt have to threaten or preach because you taught by example.  I chose to discuss this first because it is the most appealing attribute I possess today.3

I can't say enough about the admiration I have for you even today as you continue to demonstrate a heart felt compassion for the needs of others.  Going out of your way to help anyone who is willing to help themselves.  Not once have I ever seen you gloat at the failure of another.  Never have I seen you show total disregard to the feelings of others while persuing your own dreams. Your integrity and dignity were not compromised just to accomedate a particular situation.  I hope I'm not scaring you Dad by making you out to be perfect.  We all know that no one is perfect. However, you continue to make a concious effert to become a better person, Father, and Husband.  I am so fortunate and thankful to have a role model that leads by example and not by fear.4

If I know you, your probably thinking what did do to deserve this?, as a matter of fact I'm not sure that I do.  I am constantly reminded of deserving you are every time I introduce myself to someone who knows you.  "Your Dad is one of the finest people I've ever known", or "you make sure to tell him I said hello, your Dad's a good man".  It doesn't matter where I am: the bank, the club, one of my accounts, any outing, or just out and about, I am almost certain to cross paths with someone who knows and respects my Dad.  How awesome is that?  You make me very proud to be your son. 5

Last but not least I want talk about the single most important lesson you taught me, again through example.  There is nothing on the face of this earth that could compare to warmth and security provided by your continual display of unconditional love.  Dad, this was the key to allowing us to have a real relationship.  It was now safe to be me.  no more pretending, trying to protect feelings by lying, and knowing that when (if I should ever) I disappoint you it has nothing to do with whether you love me.6

I love you dad.  Please don't be offended that I forgot to mention all of the tangible things you taught me to do: ride a bike, bet on the horses, throw a ball, enjoy cheech and chong movies (bet you forgot that one), drive a straight shift, return people's belongings that I won while hustling pool, clean a fish, change a tire, wink at a waitress for better service, snow ski, shoot a gun, etc.,etc.,etc.7

Your proud son,8

Wow - what a fabulous write - and a fabulous tribute to your date - I think everybody should do this at some time in their lives - afterall family are the important thing in our lives and often the most often overlooked!
I did a similar thing to my Nan ( my little nan I called her) but sadly I did it after she had gone ! I so regret that

Anyway - a great tribute - yes I'm repeating myself now ! sorry

    Dear Son,

I must admit that I while I cherish your effusive love and praise, I did feel a little uncomfortable reading it. I wasn’t sure that I was worthy of such a tribute. Nevertheless, still possessing an ego, I thank you very much for writing this tribute to me.

About those things I taught you. After a reminder, I do remember the Cheech and Chong movie and I may have taught you how to bet on the horses but I wish I could have taught you how to win betting on the horses. I never learned how to do that. And that thing about winking at a waitress, well you didn’t need to tell that.

As for unconditional love, you may have taught me more about unconditional love than I taught you. You taught me how to become comfortable giving a big hug, perhaps the hugs I should have given more of, when you were growing up. . I appreciate that. I now give your brother Allen a big hug and he is about to get used to it.

    Thanks again for the tribute,

    Love Dad

Thank you for the kind words, and yes I am very fortunate in regards to my entire family. I have wanted to write my Dad a letter for years, but I did'nt have the guts. He like to read my poetry, so I know he will stumble across this story within the next few days. Thank you so much for being at the right place at the right time with this contest.
