Dear Mr. J. B. Scotch:6

I must sincerely apologize for my absence; I understand that it has been weeks since we've last been together. I must confess, throughout the entirety of our relationship, I have been unhappy. This may come as a shock to you, what with my happy mask and all, but it is true. I found myself wanting more than what our fleeting get-togethers brought me. Namely, reassurance; reassurance that you would always be there for me, that no matter what happened, your kiss could make the world right again. No matter how much you tried, or how dearly I wanted it, the truth is you cannot give me what I am searching for.7

I wanted to tell you before you found out from someone else. I know from experience that you can be quite rash and sometimes violent, which is why I am telling you this in a letter. I want you to be happy for me. If you truly did love me all these years, you will be glad to know that I have found someone that makes me feel like I can do anything in the world with just a kiss. I know you’ve met, there was that one party where I know you mixed quite a bit, but you were drunk, and so was he. I always thought that to be satisfied with him, I would need you as well: I now know that is not true. 9
