Chapter 21

Ê Ê Bane lay with his eyes open, thrumming his fingers on the hard floor. His nose twitched occasionally, and his ears did too, to hone in on every little sound.2

Ê Ê An endless rhythm. That's all it was. That's all anything was, inside the cell. He couldn't remember the last time he had had a proper run, not on one of those ridiculous treadmill things that They made him work on, to measure his speed. 6

No, not at all, he thought. A nice, long run over an open expanse, where he could simply stretch his long limbs, and ricochet of of every surface he could find, at breakneck speed. 7

Ê ÊHe grinned. Oh, yeah. And don't forget a large quarter pound burger at the end, with a large fries and a Dr. Pepper. God, he had been having such horrible cravings lately. It had been forever since he had even seen a Mickey D's. He would give his right hand at the moment to instantly appear at a McDonald's, to simply drool over the menu.8

Ê He rolled over onto his back, to stare at the ceiling. His old cell mate had disappeared, the other night. Had just been there in the evening, and in the morning, had vanished. 9

Ê ÊWell, serves the little weakling right, he thought to himself. 10

Ê ÊThe boy wouldn't stop crying, and only kept the collar shocking him every time he wailed. And, of course, every time he got shocked, he would cry some more. Those had been some miserable, sleepless weeks that Bane had gone through.11

Ê ÊWell, he thought, on the bright side, I'll have a new cellmate. I just hope he's not as idiotic as the last ones.12

Ê Ê He had had to keep snarling at them, to keep them quiet, or to force them into submission.13

The last ones had all been fairly normal, and only one had been inhuman. He ran his fingers through his tangled, thick black hair, wincing as they snagged on a particularly painful knot.14

Ê Ê I wonder what the next one will be like? he wondered before changing form and curling up, his thick tail almost covering his nose. I guess only morning will tell.15
