I Gave You My Heart

I Gave You My Heart1

It was New Year's Eve 1980-81, myself and a couple of friends decided to throw a house party. Lisa's parents were away in Florida for the winter and the house was all hers.  We had it all set to start at 8:00 p.m. sharp.  As our friends started to arrive I noticed that Tracy had a new friend with her, someone I hadn't met.  "Joyce", she said. "I want you to meet my friend Jeff, we grew up together.  He was free this evening and since I don't drive he offered to come along to your party."  Then she introduced him to Lisa and he already knew Kara as they had also grown up together.2

The evening was going great, everyone laughing and dancing just waiting to ring in the New Year. There was one thing I noticed though, every time I turned around Jeff was there smiling.  I kind of felt a little uneasy at first, however Tracy assured me he was a great guy and she wasn't with him as a date.  Well, I wasn't here to meet anyone. I was only here to have fun with friends and welcome in the New Year.  I avoided this guy like the plague all night.  3

When we returned to work on January 2nd Tracy came right in to my department and mentioned that Jeff had been quite taken by me.  I just smiled and said oh really, thank you for letting me know.  Kara worked in the same department with me and I went to her immediately after Tracy left.  I asked her all about this Jeff guy.  My curiosity had been piqued and I wanted to know more.  It took a month before I had the courage to tell Kara that it was alright to give him my number at work.4

He wanted to call me about getting together some evening.  I received his call the next day and we planned a date for Friday night.5

It's Friday evening and I'm all nervous getting ready, I hadn't dated much as I was involved in two different sports which took up a lot of my free time.  My mom had called my sisters and of course they came to the house to meet him. Oh boy!  How to make me even more nervous?  He arrived promptly at 7:30 p.m. and when my mom answered the door he handed her a bunch of flowers.  You can imagine what this did for my mom.  He was introduced to everyone and I could see that he was a bit nervous not having known all these people would be here.  We left for the evening and he opened my door to get into the car.  I thought to myself, he is a gentleman (smiling).  Little did I know that my family had been watching all this from inside. 6

As we were driving to the club where we were going to see a couple of bands he turned to me and apologized.  I was stunned and asked him why.7

He told me that he had brought the flowers for me, but when my mom opened the door he felt so bad that he didn't have some for her as well and had to give them to her.  I laughed and said no problem you made her very happy because she absolutely loves fresh flowers.  I had been so nervous that night that I forgot to eat dinner.  The beers flowed down easily enough and when we left I was not feeling that well.  While on the ride home I had to ask Jeff to pull over and I lost it, so to speak.  I just figured oh great, first date and I get sick. I won't hear from this guy again.  He asked me if I wanted to get some coffee or hot chocolate to settle my stomach but I just wanted to be home.  I was more embarrassed than anything.  Needless to say, he called the next day to see how I was feeling and wanted to know if I would like to go out again.8

It was the beginning of May now and we had been dating regularly, he was even interested in coming to my games.  Lately, whenever we would go out for dinner I would be so hungry and yet when the meal came I couldn't eat.  I wasn't sure what was going on.  We were on our way home from a function that his work held annually and I got up the courage to tell him what was happening.  I said I'm not sure what's going on but I think I'm falling in love with you.  Now the panic set in.  I had just committed myself, all I could think was he is never going to call again.9

My heart was out on the table, it became his instantly when he spoke these words, "Joyce, I fell in love with you the first night I met you".10

We married the following year in April and every day I thank God for sending me my soul mate.  It's been more than 23 years now and I still find a reason to love him more each and every day.  I had never believed in love at first sight, now you could never make me believe that it doesn't happen.  We are blessed forever.11

Author notes

I'm not much of a story writer, I hope you didn't get too bored here. I just had to tell the story of how I met my wonderful husband. I didn't go into full detail as it would have been far too long. My family still raves about the fact that he was such a gentleman our first date, giving flowers to my mom and holding the car door for me. Thank you in advance to everyone that takes the time to read this.

I did change the names of the friends involved.

this story was beautiful and showed how simple true love can be. you mentioned you were not a real good story writer, and i must say this is a clear sign of an amature. but then again, i truly enjoyed it. congratulations on your story. i hope you keep writing and become better!

Kitty, Thank you so much, we really do. That's why I give thanks every day that we found each other. Good thing he has a sense of humor or he wouldn't have called after the first impression I made. I have to say though, I do believe in love at first sight as I remember his words like it was yesterday. Thank you again from the bottom of my heart. Lots of love, Mom

Rose, I am so sorry I wasn't up enough on the chat lingo to understand that "osm". Thanks to Navdeep for enlightening me.
I am so happy that you enjoyed my story and I now see that you weren't laughing at the work itself but the embarrassing moments that I had. Please forgive my ignorance, I'm trying to keep up with all this chat lingo. Thank you for the awesome comment. I know, I know, I spelled it out. LOL Happy writing to you. Love and blessings to you for the sunniest of days, today and always. Joyce

Navdeep, Thank you so much for the applause and the wonderful and ever so colorful as usual comment. I would never think of you as a lunatic. Those things that go around in the email can get so repetitive and it took a lot of patience for you to keep answering the same questions over and over. I loved your replies to them. LOL I know I have been blessed, believe me. If you are in the New England area in 2 years, you know I want to meet you my friend. We can discuss that. I'm so happy you enjoyed the story and were not bored by it. I know how easily you get bored with your creative imagination. Thank you for letting me know about the chat lingo abbreviation, I will have to send a new reply to the Rose. Now I feel awful, taking foot out of mouth right now. It's amazing how many points we get for commenting on stories, I never realized till I started reading SueMason who is a fantastic story writer and poet. She is going to make one heck of a romance novelist. I think it was her inspiring me that brought out this work. Maybe I will try another soon, never know what's going to pop into my head. There's a lot of space up there between the ears. LOL When you get some time, it would be good to see a story come flowing from your pen as well. Thank you so much my friend. Love and blessings for you, today and always. Joyce

OH GEEEEEEZ!!! You must've thought that I was a lunatic when I wrote that "Lust at first sight" thing in my mail! Well, you are a very good story writer too and I wasn't in the least bit bored.
As for your love story, all I can say is that you're one of the few lucky ones who find love and yeah, believe in it. You described the entire thing so smoothly, as if it were yesterday. Oh yeah, I wasn't bored at all...which means that I found this work interesting.(pretty obvious, I know )
Oh by the way, if you celebrate your siver jubilee, don't forget to invite me to the bash...after 2 years, I'll be in New England are, hopefully. .....KIDDING.
Write more stories from now on.

It was like a fairytale when I think about it at times. I really never believed until that night I told him and he gave me that reply. I was shaking in my shoes when I told him. LOL I'm so happy that you enjoyed this. You write awesome stories and I was hoping you would see this. I'm even happier that you saw it first. Thank you so much, you made my day and the smile on my face is as big as the one in my heart. Love and blessings for you, today and always my friend. Joyce
