At one point or another everyone gets to partake in a job that they never particularly wanted, but they do it anyways for one reason or another. It could be a that they need to pay rent, or are trying to work their way through school. Might have a horde or screaming children that must be fed and clothed. Who knows? Everyone has their reason.1
I am a pizza Nazi. It’s like at least five days out of every week it’s off to the ovens. Of course we don’t call it being a Nazi at work, it would be offensive to the public. God forgive us if we aren’t exactly what’s expected to the stand up member of society which I admit I’m not. 2
I remember my first day. I was so excited and all dressed up in my pizza girl outfit, ready to learn and show them all that I could be the best. You know the feeling you get when you start something new, and you plan on trying your hardest. The General manager, Tyler, instantly begins running through the ropes, not really stopping to make sure I got any of it before jumping to the next thing. Thrown off by the quick speaking man who was officially the boss man to me now.3
Ten minuets later we got our Friday night dinner rush. If you’ve ever worked in the food industry, you know how on top of things you’ve got to be to keep up. I was not on top of things. I stuttered on the phone, was slow at everything. I wasn’t even tagging boxes fast enough. Tyler keeps barking at me, wanting me to go faster, faster, faster. 4
It’s starts to slow down, and I’m sweating like crazy, my heart pumping with the rush of it. My stomach fills with butterflies as I start to fill the rack with pizza crusts. My friend, who had gotten me into all this, is standing next to me, telling me about people and I watch them out of the corner of my eye. Lisa, one of the delivery drivers, who I had know from before I even started work there smiling over at Jennifer in that dirty kind of way. The kind that screams “if I could throw you over the counter right now I so would”.5
Then there saw Royce. A tall barrel of laughs is how he came of. Always smiling, kind spoken type of person. It was sort of funny, he was the one I was most comfortable asking questions about the job, even though he never knew the answer, because he was a driver, not an insider. For some reason I just felt better after talking to him while I was at work. I suppose his manner is slightly contagious. Those are the only two drivers that really stuck with me on that first day.6
For me work became something I dreaded. I wasn’t there enough for things to really stick with me. For me to really get most things, I have to do them over and over and keep doing it consistently to keep it. I was only in there two or three days out of the week for a few hours. Usually during the busier hours, when it was pure hell for someone who didn’t know what they were doing.7
I know this is a random addition to the story but I feel the need to share. Tyler has turrets‘. If you don’t know what they are, it’s a quirk, where they make a random noise, or movement. Often times they aren’t even aware of it. I was standing next to him on the make line when it happened the first time. We where throwing pizzas together, and all of a sudden….meow. Meow? Really? And there was this little giggle first, kind of maniacal sounding that came out first.8
Its one of those things that you laugh at behind your hand. Not something that should be thought of as funny, but really can’t be helped. I suppose it just shows my lack of maturity. Oh well. I like to laugh. Ah the first days. I’ll never forget them. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
Author notes
Just a little something I've started working on. I might write more of it if I can catch any interest. This is a really rough draft, so have mercy. If I decide its something I want to run with I'll put a bit more love into it.
