Synen's Legend-Ch.02

Chapter 2 1

First lesson was powers practice. Grace and Michael were to duel in it. The duel took half an hour before both sank to the ground, exhausted. Ray and Cinders licked their master and mistress, replenishing their energy. 2

Second lesson was Research. They had to research a subject and then present it to the class, in pairs. Grace and Michael researched familiars. They found a thick, dusty old book with a breaking spine and they opened it, a cloud of dust rising from it as it hit the table. They found a chapter on familiars and they began to read;3

Familiars are part a witch of wizard’s soul. Emotions like pain, happiness or even love, travel through their telekinetic bond. Legend says that one day, two Sorans with extraordinary magic will meet and their familiars will immediately become allies. Eventually, these Sorans will fall in love and will save Synen in the great end.4

The section on familiars ended there, abruptly. Pages had been ripped out. Grace and Michael searched the book for the missing pages but still didn’t find them. Grace watched Michael gently pet Ray, who was still in his cat form. Cinders sent a wave of concern through their bond and Grace smiled at her reassuringly before scratching behind her ears. Cinders rubbed her body against Grace’s stomach and purred loudly, settling down in the fold of her lap. 5

At break, Michael picked up his bag and helped Grace up. Then they walked out into the playground, their familiars trotting after them. As soon as they stepped out of the door, a large icicle was thrown at them, missing Grace by centimeters! Michael glared at the person who had chucked it at them. It was a tall blonde girl with grey eyes and pale skin. She wasn’t particularly attractive but, still, boys drooled when they saw her. All except Michael. Grace had jumped into Michael’s chest, to avoid getting hit by the icicle and Michael squeezed her gently,
“Hey. Are you alright?” Grace looked up at him and smiled,
“I’m fine now.” Michael grinned as Grace slipped her hand into his. Grace then turned and glowered at the girl standing there. The blonde girl was about two heads taller than Grace, but that didn’t stop Grace from snapping her fingers. Michael had clicked his fingers at the same time and Ray and Cinders jumped out in front of their masters, in their wolf forms. They both growled at the girl and Ray snarled,
“Keep away, Circe.” Cinder’s hackles raised as Circe’s own familiar sat in front of her. The white polar bear with amber coloured eyes was in a fighting pose. Grace and Michael gazed at their familiars steadily, allowing them to approach the new familiar. Both knowing that the bear would not be able to stop two very strong familiars with more than one power. 6

Circe watched the two wolves pounce on Jasper and she felt the pain shoot through their bond, she flinched. Grace and Michael just stood, in each other’s arms, watching Cinders and Ray win. Finally, Circe screamed with pain,
“Stop! I give up!” Cinders and Ray backed away from Jasper, their hackles still raised and their teeth still showing. Grace slowly stepped towards Circe and helped her over to a bench. Gently, Grace kissed Circe’s forehead and the cuts and pain disappeared from Circe’s skinny body. Circe opened her cold eyes and looked up at Grace. 7

Michael suddenly saw a long icicle in Circe’s hand, he yelled,
“Grace!” just before Circe drove it through Grace’s lower stomach. A manic smile on Circe’s face. Cinders collapsed on the floor, blood pouring out from her stomach. Ray nuzzled her and licked her cheek gently, moaning, as Cinder’s head fell to the floor. Michael sprinted over to Grace and stared at her, “Grace! Grace?!” Grace’s blue eyes flickered open and she said fearfully,
“Michael, I don’t want to die.” Michael shook his head, his green eyes filled with pain,
“You aren’t, you aren’t going to die, Grace.” he picked her up carefully in his arms and stood up; just as Grace’s eyelids closed slowly; her body went limp. Michael fell to the ground on his knees, his shoulders shuddering, and lay her on the tarmac of the playground. A silvery tear slipped down his cheek as he leant closer and whispered, “I know I have only known you for a couple of hours, but, I love you.” And he slowly pressed his lips to her, still warm mouth. The tear fell onto Grace’s lips and slipped into her parted mouth. 8
