An Assassin's Melody: Prologue

“Be Careful sis,” A male voice whispers. His outline is all that is visible and it soon disappears after his warning.1

“Good-bye, brother,” a female voice replies from the darkness. The girl tears off into the night. Tree branches stretch out in attempt to reach her, but only brush on her skin as she passes. Soon there is a break in the clearing and she passes through it as a blur. The only thing able to be made out by the light are two pointed animal ears mounted on the sides of her head in a crooked fashion.2

She soon comes to a halt in front of a group of cloaked figures. Different colored energies shoot from each of their hands and from each of the energies a variety of weapons emerge. Two long swords materialize in her hands before she disappears right in front of the groups eyes. As fast as she had disappeared, the girl reappears behind one of the figures with a sword ready at its neck. The other is slightly below on the figures chest. When she goes in for the kill, she is taken aback as the other figures retaliate with a group attack. The girl receives deep wounds to the shoulder blades and the mid back. Her strength is slowly sapped away as the poison begins to take affect.3

One figure threatens the slowly dying girl, “Your only options are to come with us for the antidote or riot in your grave!”4

As if in response she teleports away, “Then she has chosen death.” The figure states in an icy tone.5

Farther out in the forest sits the girl on a boulder, her feet swaying back and forth. “This can’t go on any longer,” she says thinking out loud. 'Aidan, I can’t only think of myself and continue running in hopes that my problems will fade away. Soon they will try other means to hunt me and they bring you into this as well. Even if I do turn myself in you’ll try anything to release me. You my even get killed in the processes.' She thinks to herself.6

After much thought, she comes up with an idea. “The forbidden magic!” She mutters an incantation and an orb of red light flickers in a circle surrounding her in its glow. It stops and shoots toward the sky and leaves view. “Adain, please forgive me,” she apologizes even though she knows her brother will never hear her words. The girl mutters one final incantation and like before a red orb appears. When the orb finishes its circle, it does not shoot toward the sky as the one did before, but is in taken by the girl’s body.7

The girl sniffs the air as if catching a scent and teleports to another part of the forest. The figures from before are advancing forward in the other direction so she is not seen. The figure in the front comes to a halt and signals the other to do the same. As the others come to a halt, the figure pivots back to see his prize standing behind them and making no attempt to attack. The rest of them follow their leader’s example and pivot back as well. Their leader pushes his way to the girl and grabs one of the long swords dangling in her lifeless fingers. He carefully grabs the sword and slowly brings it to her tensed neck. “Finally given up I see. A very wise decision, my dear,” he says as he makes a swift cut to her neck.8

The figure motions for two more man to advance from the line. The chains they hold clink and jingle as they move through the lines. She makes no struggle to stop them as they chain her by neck and ankles. As they continue on to their destination the girl is forced to move along or be dragged.9

The five long years she had spent running had now become meaning less within a matter of seconds. All the years she had fought back for her freedom were wasted. There was no chance she would be free now. Although the life of torture she had long feared would now become real. 10
