Don't Trust the Dead- Day 1 [Edited]

I didn’t want to open my eyes. I felt dead, with a feeling like all of my senses had been blocked. But I was still breathing, and was still able to move my limbs, though they were so weak that it hurt to do so. I slowly became aware of something… voices? I forced my cold hands to my face, and covered my ears. I wanted nothing to do with whatever was going on outside my own little world- and hoped they wanted nothing to do with me. After all, that’s the way it had been, and I never wanted that to change. A feeling of dread welled up inside of me as I noticed the voices getting louder and louder… As if they were trying to get my attention. With a deep sigh, I gave in, and removed my hands from my ears.
“I didn’t know BloodRose was so desperate for recruits… It’s pathetic, really.” came one voice, calm and firm. It was as if infinite knowledge was behind the simple words of the one speaking. It became harder and harder to stop myself from looking, but I somehow managed.
“Sh-shut up!” Another voice snapped. This one was dull and bland… And it sounded rather confused. “What would you know?! We need as many recruits as we can get!”
“Have you no sen—“ As I shifted into an upright position, the voice stopped. I could feel the eyes of the owners of both voices staring at me, and I decided to open my eyes. And when I did, I was hit with a sudden shock.1

This land was nothing like the home I remembered… Even though my only memory I had was vague, I knew this. The world in front of me was barren- dirt and dust covering everything, with only dried-up plants to cover one’s eyes form this horrible sight.
When I looked around, I saw something else; there were children, all around my age, looking about as confused as I was. All of them, that was, except for one. That one was the owner of the first voice I heard clearly enough to recognize the words it spoke. It seemed that, about the same time as I noticed him, he did the same with me. Now ignoring the boy he was previously arguing with, he began walking towards me, a calm look upon his face. He had light brown, shoulder-length hair, with the exception of a few strands that were tied back, reaching halfway down his back. He was wearing the same clothes that everyone else—even me—was wearing; Drab, beige-coloured pants that were, in most cases, too big for the one wearing them. For the top half, there was what looked like a cloak that would be worn in the desert to keep sand from painfully colliding into your chest... I hissed, noticing that I was too tall for my ‘desert cloak,’ and it was showing more than just a little bit of my stomach.2

I drew my attention back to the boy, who was now standing directly in front of my. He put his hand in his pocket momentarily, before pulling something out. With a single movement, he had attached what seemed to be as badge onto my... cloak.
The boy the stared at me, a huge smile plastered onto his face. “Welcome to Orpheus!”
I narrowed my eyes. “What?” I growled back at him. By then I had jumped to a single conclusion; everyone around me was very strange.
He grabbed my arm before turning around. “It’s not often we find a girl that the MOD’s don’t instantly kill. You got a name?” He said almost pervertedly before he started laughing, which made me want to punch him. ‘So what if I’m a girl?'. Before I could answer, he spoke again. “Of course you don’t. So, what should we call you? Well, we’ll deal with that later.” With that, the pale-skinned boy’s grip on my arm tightened and began leading me to... Who knows where.3

It was a kind of camp that he led me to, and it was there that I found three other people sitting around an open fire. It was like a classic ‘school camp-out’ scene, just without the happiness of bad cooking, forced campfire songs, and your teacher throwing up in the river just when you decide to go for a swim. Anyway, only two of the three people sitting cluelessly by the fire were talking, and even then it was just a dull and awkward conversation between strangers. The brown-haired boy let go of my arm, and signalled for me to sit down. From here, I could see the other two more easily, despite the shadows from the constantly dark world. The tiny bit of light from the fire failed to help my eyes adjust properly.
Suddenly, a shout came from the boy who had dragged me here; “Listen up!” He was now the only one standing up, and he had a serious look on his face. As the other two looked up at him, their expressions turned blank as if they were uninterested. Of course, if they were anything like me, the only thing that they would actually be interested in would be going home- wherever that was. With a long sigh, I looked up at the brown-haired boy.4

“The name’s Altair. Just call me Al... But if you guys are like everyone else, then you won’t be remembering your name anytime soon. So, guess what~?” Altair’s serious look suddenly disappeared, and was replaced by a crazy one. “I’m going to name you all! Close your eyes!” He hastily thrusted out his hand, and pointed to one of the three that were here first. I had to strain my eyes to see that one of them was wearing a scrap of cloth over his eyes. I guessed that he was blind. “Accept for you, buddy.”All four of us, almost in harmony, let out a long sigh. Altair seemed a little too enthusiastic to be one of us, and I was just about sick of his ever-changing personality. But, something inside told me that I had no choice, and so, I closed my eyes as Altair had instructed.5

“Alright, open `em up!” Again, I did as I was told, and opened my eyes. As soon as I did so, I noticed two things that weren’t there before. The first one was: Al’s face went through a new transformation, and now his crazy face was covered with a smug one. The second was that there was something hanging on a piece of string- from my neck. I followed it drearily, suddenly realizing just how tired I was. The piece of string wasn’t all that long, though it was long enough to touch the ground when I was sitting down. Attached to the end was a plastic nametag, with a single word written upon it.
“Gust...”I thought I had whispered to myself, but it was loud enough for the other four to hear. They, unenthusiastically, copied me in reading their own nametag. I could now see my ‘companions’ relatively clearly. The first one I laid my eyes on had pitch-black hair, and the n bright blue eyes which didn’t at all match. His voice was so deep that you never would have guessed he was in his mid-teens. “Rank.”6

The one that I had seen earlier—the blind one-- just groaned irately and got up, throwing the detached nametag and string over his shoulder, and started walking off. However, he didn’t walk far before he sat down again, his back turned to us. From this distance and angle, it was hard to what exactly he looked like... But what I could see was his mid-blonde hair, and the deep grey cloth he wore around his eyes. It was a good touch, with his hair. I though so, anyway. Al wasn’t very happy about the blonde’s reaction, but he picked up his card and read it for him anyway. “That guy’s Heyt! Don’t you think it fits?”7

The last person had very short and light grey hair. I could tell, even though he was sitting down, that he was very tall, much more so than I was. Not only was he tall, but his shoulders were broad, his whole body was bulky... In fact, the only part of him that wasn’t intimidating was his calm, kind face. Altair walked up to him and placed his hand on his shoulder. “This guy... Is Gray.” The one named Gray looked up at Al and, noticing his smug look, smiled back at the one who had named him.8

Altair walked a few steps in the direction opposite to the way Rank had gone. He started stretching, and peered back over his shoulder, his eyes resting on me. “Gust...” He smiled as he spoke my new name, obviously liking his choice. “Mind giving Gray a hand? He’s... a little hard of hearing. Tell the others to get some rest, and I’ll get something for brekkie tomorrow.” With that, Altair walked off.9

Rank smiled at me, and he got up next. “Gust, huh? Don’t worry about Gray, okay? I’ll deal with it- you just rest.”
“...Kay.” I didn’t argue or anything—I really wasn’t in the mood. I didn’t even question him; I just got up and walked over to where Heyt was, laying down about two mitres away from him. The soil was unexpectedly soft, and almost resembled mattress... Or, at least, it resembled the vague memory of what it felt like to sleep on a mattress. There were tiny bits of stone and sticks digging into my body... But I was so surprisingly exhausted that I didn’t take me long to fall asleep, despite the conditions.
