A Solider's Promise

The pain cuts deep as you say goodbye.I never saw this coming,I never would have thought this day would come.I sit and cry as you lace up your boots.Watch helplessly as you button up your shirt and grab your bags.You look at me and smile before you take me into your arms.1

"I don't want you to go" I cry holding you tight. "I know I don't want to go but I have to" you whispered."Don't leave me,just come home to me"I whisper kissing your ear. "I promise I'll come home to you"You whisper kissing my ear.2

Slowly we pull apart but I'm not ready to let go.You sigh and look me in the eye.3

"I realy have to go"you say."No"I say letting the tears return. " I promise you with all my heart and love,a soldiers promise,I will come home to you,alive" you say whipping away my tears."Okay,I'll be waiting"I say finally letting you go.4

Its been months since I last heard from you.I try not to think about where you are,all I think about is your promise.I go about my day as if your still here though its not the same. 5

One night as I'm watching a movie I get a call saying that you want a video conference.I was so excited,I jotted down the information and ran to the computer.I turned everything on and waited until I saw your face.You smiled at me but it wasn't the same.You were different and I could tell.I frown and you frown in response.6

"Whats wrong" you ask. "You've changed" I say looking down. "War does that,but I'll be home soon" you promise. "I'll be waiting" I say smiling.7

We talked for hours before you had to go.i waited patently for you to call again but you never did.8

Its been a year and still no word.I've moved and excepted what you're doing over there.I still think about you but it doesn't hurt as bad.9

On afternoon when I came home from work I saw a government vehicle parked out front but paid it no mind.I walked to the porch and was greeted by two men in formal dress. When they ask to come inside I know immediately why their here. I drop my purse and my keys as the tears come down. I shake my head and deny it but its no use my solider isn't coming home to me.
