The sound of howling startled me from my sleep. My eyes shot open and I scanned the room. There was nothing there. Gently, I sat up in my bed and looked out the window. There was nothing out there. Peter sat up next to me and kissed me gently on the cheek. A small grin came across my face. 3
“What’s wrong Honey?” 4
“They’re out there, watching us.” 5
He pulled me closer and held me for awhile. I felt safe in his arms. He never ceased to amaze me with his amazing ability to soothe my worries. 6
“They won’t come near us Marie. You know that.” He comforted me. 7
“Peter, I only worry about Shilah.”8
“I won’t let that happen again. Never will the Elders or those dogs get their hands on Shilah.” Peter reassured me. 9
Tears began to stream down my face. Memories of that dark night filled my head. A single glimpse of our precious Harmony forced tears to come harder. Peter pulled my face up to his so our eyes could meet. Looking deeply into them he kissed me. When he pulled away, I could see a single tear roll down his cheek. 10
“Harmony will always be in our memories and our hearts. But my dearest Marie, we can’t live in the past. Now we must protect our Shilah.”11
I nodded. He was right and I knew it. Shilah was our world. We curled up next to each other and drifted back off to sleep. 12
