2 Sentence Hook (contest entry)

The stillness of the night was broken as an inhuman howl was flung into the dark sky -- a keening wail that carried on the wind and brought with it a sense of both paralyzing fear and electrifying fervor -- and it seemed that all who heard knew that this was Lupa's ultimate cry of love, of hope, of freedom. Ed, unaware of what had come to pass and halfway across the world, felt a chill run up his spine and glanced uneasily behind him, as if Lupa's passion had traversed the globe to softly stroke his back in a lover's caress.

Not too rambly at all. And I love that this was inspired by Poe. I love Poe.
These sentences are wonderful. They stunned me certainly. Great work! Thank you very much for your entry!
