Rainbows and Blood - Chapter Six

Chapter Six1

“Fangs and Claws”2

The cheerleaders took the center stage, with the vampires falling back and forming a circle around Anfel and Sellie. The elf quickly threw the Blood book to Sellie, knowing what was coming. The girls didn’t seem to notice or pay attention to what the book was. Magic lightning blasted at the duo, but neither was affected.3

The elf smirked. “We’re both protected by the books.”4

“Go. Let the guys handle it,” Tira ordered.5

As the girls filed out of the room, Anfel turned to the head cheerleader. “By the way, I forgot something.” He punched her in the face, knocking her out for the second time. It would be best to have her out of this fight. The cheerleaders gone, the guys started throwing menacing looks in the duo’s direction. Sellie quietly picked up the bat, stuffing the book under her shirt, so it touched bare flesh.6

Anfel dropped his human glamour, letting them glimpse his true elven form. His impressive yellow-and-blue armor and changed appearance had the desired effect of fear in the vampires eyes. “So …” he drew his scimitar, “what are you guys waiting for?”7

“Me.” A handsome red-haired man walked into the room. “Hey guys, the girls told you told me you might need some help.”8

Anfel faced the stranger. “You're the …” He wasn't about to let him change – he charged immediately … but he was too slow. His sword was met by claws. The tasteful clothes lay in tattered shreds around the furry body of the monster. Yellow eyes met his. He jumped back without thinking, but he had underestimated the vampires. Two of them were on him before he could react.9

He punched one of them away, but another had sunk it's fangs into his sword hand. The pain was too much, and he dropped the scimitar to the floor. The elf stuck his knife into the back of the vampire’s throat – although not fatal, it got it to release his arm. Flashes of bright light told him Sellie was at least still alive. No time to think about his sword. The werewolf came at him, forcing the elf to duck and flee.10

The knife was a useless weapon in a fight like that. He slashed two vampires throats, knowing it would only slow them down for a bit, and jumped to the chair the cheerleader still sat slumped on. He threw his knife in a vampire’s eye that got too close, and broke pieces of wood off the chair. 11

He took care of two vampires straight away, turned them to dust on the spot. However, he couldn't see the werewolf leap at him, until a flash of magic brought him down to the ground. Anfel glanced at Sellie – two vampires were down around her, and the rest eyed her warily. “Thanks.” He had no warning except a look in her eyes.12

Instincts made him duck. His own scimitar went just above his head. One of the vampires had got a hold of it. No thought went into his next move. He grabbed the chair, using it and the cheerleader as a shield. The sword thrust into it, and her, only stopping inches from Anfel’s stomach. 13

The werewolf, and the other vampires, were all getting up. Anfel looked around him. “Okay. Now I'm mad.” No one was using his own sword against him. He spun back, impaling a vampire, turning it to dust, ducked a fist, and impaled another. “Bat,” he said, holding his hand out. Without hesitation Sellie threw her bat to him. He gave the approaching werewolf his best swing, straight into the head. And another, and another. While it staggered disoriented, he avoided a swipe from his own scimitar, and impaled the vampire that held it. It clattered to the ground in a pile of dust. 14

Throwing away all his other weapons, he prepared to face the recovering werewolf with his scimitar back in hand. The claws came at him – he hacked them away. A burst of magic from Sellie saved him from a vampire that would surely have killed him, but the elf didn't miss a beat. He plunged the scimitar into the beast’s heart, and then took it's head off. By this point the vampires left were backing away – finally the fled the room. Leaving Anfel and Sellie alone, with a dead werewolf and cheerleader, and lots of dust.15

Anfel looked at the cheerleader’s bloody abdomen. He calmly cleaned his scimitar on her clothes, and retrieved his dagger. Then he walked over to Sellie. Music still blared from below. No one even knew what had gone on there. The elf didn't sheathe the blades as he eyed the girl. “Give me the book.”16

She backed away from him, clutching it. “Why?”17

“The guardian is dead. I'm sorry, but I've come too far.”18

“What do you mean?” She backed up against the wall.19

“Give me the book.”20

“No. You can't … we had a deal …”21

Anfel sheathed his dagger and ripped the book from her hands. When she tried to get it back he pointed his scimitar towards her. “Don't think I won't do it. We're all dead anyway. What's one more body?” She stayed back as he walked to the nightstand. He ripped the Rainbows book from his stomach, winching at the pain. The elf removed the tape, and put both of them on top of each other on the nightstand. Anfel raised his sword above them, point facing down.22

“Don't! Please!” came Sellie’s cry. 23

Anfel hesitated, just for a moment, before bringing the scimitar down with all his strength. But as he reached the book, it was like hitting a block of granite. There wasn't even a scratch on it. “What?” He laid them out side by side, and tried to slash them, taking care the sword hit both at the same time. Nothing. “No.” He hacked at them, again and again, but nothing worked. He took a step back, staring at them. Had the witch lied to him? Was there no way to destroy them? Or was it something he didn't know? A ritual maybe?24

“Anfel.” He turned his head to Sellie. She was standing at the window. She pointed. “Look.” The elf took both books and joined her. A small procession of some of the most powerful Blood creatures came from the back, heading around the house. “They're gonna come in – there's no escape.”25

The elf waited a few minutes until he was sure they were out of range of hearing what was about to happen. “Okay.” He sheathed the scimitar and looked at Sellie. “Do you trust me?”26

“No.”27

“It doesn’t really matter. Cause this is our only way out.” He took the cheerleader’s chair with her on it and shattered the glass in the window, then threw it aside.. Anfel grabbed Sellie, picking her up.28

“Hey, you're not gonna …” Anfel leapt with her out the window.29

Aw, you serious? That fight was almost... Too easy and too perfect. Doesn't Anfel EVER get hurt? And I thought the Werewolf and Anfel would have had more of a one on one duel, than him fighting vampires and werewolf at the same time. Buuut that's just me.
I absolutely love the detail you throw into these fight scenes though, I mean, wow. It feels like it's happening right in front of me. ^.^

STOP KILLING OFF THE VAMPIRES!!!!! THEY NEED TO GO DOWN IN A REAL FIGHT. YOU KILL THEM WAY WAY WAY WAY WAY TOO EASILY. Also, i really can't take this one seriously since every time i see the word cheerleader now i think of heroes: save the cheerleader, save the world lol. I like how you had a party but as a supernatural creature with those sorts of key weaknesses, wouldn't you come prepared?

Nice dramatic ending to this one too, most excellent. Just what i would say.

A agree that the vamps are going too quickly, but for a different reason. So you're a guardian, a big muckymuck in your order and you're having a party with wolves and witches and vampires, and you have wooden furniture? Wait, I take it all the flatware is sliver too? It's the small nuiances that make the story credible, and maybe I'm still grumpy, but I'm not so keen on Anfel's Chuck Norris invincibility.
I thought the guardian would also be a bit more difficult to kill. Waving a chair around with a body attached to it, makes this guy what the Hulkster? And even if you are retreating because they're killing you in droves (if you get to close), do you all run downstairs, or make the last one out of the room stand watch to make sure they don't come after you?
Didn't the werewolf enter the room at the end of the last chapter?
Just thoughts that I'm going with. Maybe I'm not quite seeing things the way I should.

  • You are killing your vampires wayy to quickly lol it like Bamn! there gone lol
But i do love your fantasy work!! and i love this story!!
I'm just sorry that i didn't read this eariler

I feel silly for not making the connection that the books would cancel out the witches' powers. Now... if only it worked on vamps and wolves... lol
However, looks like the books are protected from swords? *is intrigued*
    And ut-oh.... Run guys, run!

    dialog: 5.

Yeah ... I should have included that the books turn vamps into kitten and wolves into dogs
