Chapter 11
(Two years earlier)2
“It’s a new year you guys!” Sammy shouted. “We’ve known each other for two years. It’s official. Next year, we’ll all be totally sick of each other!” Sammy was wearing the same old sun glasses he always did. It might have been a new pair, but it was definitely the same kind. His tightly curled hair was shiny with pomade, and his black skin made every girl at the school weep. He had big brown eyes and tiny ears. He was the most popular sophomore at the school, despite his short stature. They were walking around campus prepping themselves for the orientation for this years’ school year. Just looking around they saw all the new kids showing off their powers to each other, and all of the old returning students laughing at them.3
“Don’t you think that’s kind of a sick thing to wish for?” teased Victoria in reply to Sammy's comment, tossing her purple hair back like any other girl you would know. She had tan skin that seemed to almost glow with beauty, and she wore deep purple contacts just for the look of them. She was tall, thin, and several would say, perfect. This was in fact their second year training together, trying to survive school, and trying to survive each other, but they knew that trying to survive watching the new kids try to use their powers in training was just going to make them laugh themselves to death. It was a known fact that all the new kids would have major issues the first few weeks.4
“I’m just sorry I had to spend my ‘sweet sixteen’ with you punks!” said Phillip laughing. Philip was tall, fair skinned, skinny, and attractive. He had spiked dirty blond hair with red tips, and he had hazy grey eyes. There was always this kind of excitement on the first day back to school. They all knew that this meant working again. Training they had had all summer long, but school was new every year. They would go to training awe struck to see what kinds of new powers were coming into the school and seeing how some of the returning orphans’ powers had developed.5
“Last I checked we had to spend our ‘sweet sixteen’ with you too!” joked Sammy as they entered the orientation room. The orientation room was the largest room on the entire campus. It was almost like a theater, accept the stage wasn’t elevated, the seats were, and the seats were those chairs that hook together on the sides. The oddly hooked chairs seemed to stretch back as far as the eye could see which was odd because there were only one hundred and ninety students. There was a pool of water in front of the non elevated stage, and there was a single stepping stone in the middle. There was also a door on either side of the pool. The entrance was in the back, and if you looked at the room from there, some would say it was magical. Sammy, Alice, Victoria, and Phillip sat down in the seats as close to the back as they could find. They knew that this orientation would be just as boring as the last. They definitely felt sorry for all the new students that didn’t know what they were getting themselves into.6
“Hello and welcome to the fourteenth year here at SMTM. I am headmaster Riot, and I hope that this year will be as grand as the last, and I have a feeling that it will be better.” The four in the back were moving their mouths with him. They knew every speech he would give this year, for they were good friends with the headmaster.7
“This year our student population has increased by fifty percent…”8
“Wow! That’s surprising don’t you think?” said Phillip in shock.9
“Well, ever since we started accepting students who weren’t orphans, we have grown a lot. I think that those kids who still have parents are lucky.” Victoria said.10
“They are, but I’m not.” said Alice. “Their parents probably didn’t just drop them off and leave them with nothing.”11
“Sorry Alice. I keep forgetting that you’re so sensitive about that, but you’re right, no one deserves that.”12
“Yeah, I am right. There’s no reason for that rhyme.” She replied. This was something that she said on a regular basis, and it didn’t get very good reviews.13
“Calm down babe.” Phill said. “We’re all sorry for what happened but you don’t have to go and get so mad every time we mention it. You should be glad that you even have a parent. All of our parents died.” 14
“Ok” she said, reluctantly, and rested her head on his shoulder. She was hopelessly enthralled with him, and it was obvious. Phil really liked her, but if he could change some things about her, he would. She was so thin that you would swear that she had an eating disorder, even though she didn't. If you looked at her, her eyes were grey. Not the same kind of hazy grey that Phil's eyes were, just grey. They didn't have any interesting features, or for that matter any normal features. They were just plain old dead grey. When she used her powers though, they turned completely white.15
“…This year, we plan on having some renovation done to various areas on the campus. The detention hall will have a mutation cancellation field around it so that any powers you plan on using will be useless.” the headmaster said. You could hear groans all throughout the audience in that moment. “I know” he said, “but it’s for your and my own good.”16
“Well it’s a good thing we don’t get put in detention!” whispered Victoria over the crowd,17
“You three don’t, I do.” Said Sammy, as the people in front of him looked back to see what the racket was. Sammy could definitely be trouble sometimes.18
“…We also plan to have labs one and two combine into one building…”19
“Yes! Finally! I’ve been waiting for this.” said Victoria. She was a total science geek.20
“…resource store and common rooms will be open all day…”21
“We know where we’ll be spending all of our time this year!”22
“Shut up Sammy.” Said Victoria.23
“…And I’ll need to see the following students after orientation. Phillip Shock, Victoria Braveheart, Sammy Mills, and Alice Smith.”24
“What!” Alice said as she lifted her head off of Phil’s shoulder in shock. “We’re already in trouble!”25
“So much for ‘you guys don’t get sent to detention.’” said Sammy.26
“Shut up. You’re coming to!” said Alice.27
“Will every one please meet with their advisers now, accept for the preceding students. Thank you.”28
