Heroes Prologue

Heroes Prologue

“How do you plead?” asked the judge who was assigned to the trial of Phillip Shock.
“Guilty.” said Phillip, ashamed, as he cried at the stand. He had been wrongly accused of a crime he didn’t commit. Not at any point in his life did Phillip ever consider rape or murder. Not many people knew it, but the girl who accused him was one of his best friends, and in fact, his girlfriend. Another thing that not many people knew was that Phillip was in fact a mutant, and so was the girl who accused him. He lived at an orphanage for mutants, and that was where he had school, a home, three square meals a day, training, and one hundred and ninety people to just hang out with. His best friends, and future partners, were Sammy, Victoria, Alice, and Morris, but this would be the day that would change their relationships and lives forever.
“Forty years for rape and attempted murder.” Smash! The judge’s hammer came down with a beat of pain in all the ears of Phillips’ friends. All accept for Alice, for she was the one who had accused him. Why this came about, no one was sure, but there were a few good guesses. Alice was the only one in the orphanage who still had one parent; her father. Her father was not a man to enjoy being acquainted with. He was an alcoholic, a druggie and, some would say, insane. Alice also happened to be the most powerful mutant at the orphanage. Why this came about, no one was certain.
Five years ago, a disaster occurred in the lives of all the teenagers at the orphanage. There was one mutant, one very evil mutant, Hemet Methias that had a plan, a plan to kill every mutant but himself and his colleagues, Austin Chase, Max, and Claire Rose. He succeeded in this plan, and these teenagers were the descendants of the generation of mutants that were killed. The reason that these now mutant teenagers were not affected is that they were not yet mutated. It is said that a mutation will not occur until a person who has the potential to be mutated reaches puberty. Once in puberty, the potential mutant will not mutate until a time of great sorrow or stress. Now, having both your parents die is very sorrowful and stressful. Accept in the case of Alice, only one of her parents was killed.
Alice’s mother was a mutant, but her father was not. He was your average Jo with no powers, no particularly special abilities, and though he wouldn’t admit it, no life. Alice never had a real relationship with her father and never really liked talking to him very much, but her mother, on the other hand, was her entire life. She was the one she turned to any time she needed help, weather it was emotional help, help on homework, or help getting the glass off the top shelf that she couldn’t reach. But that one day five years ago permanently scared her inside. Alice had a very special power that no one could ever fully understand. She was telepathic, she could fly using only her mind to do so; she could also read peoples’ minds and put thoughts into them. Though no one knew it, not even the top scientists in the world, the sheer simplicity of her power was like adding two and two.
Alice’s mother was killed at the most inopportune moment that she could have known, but the moment in which it happened is what made her so strong. Her mother was brutally murdered on the median of the street while they were walking to school talking about her homework. She was thirteen at the time, and was left sobbing on the median for hours until her dad came, slapped her for crying, threatened to kill her if she didn’t shut up, and drove her to this orphanage where he left her with nothing but the clothes on her back. The reason that he dropped her at this specific orphanage is because he knew she would be a freak like her mother. He never regretted the death of her mother because he always thought she was a freak. Alice herself was a result of rape, and her father had married her mother before she knew she was pregnant with Alice. Perhaps this is why Phillip was accused of rape, but why did she accuse him in the first place? We may find out.

This was easy to read and created just enough anticipation to want to read the following chapters. I think it great to be inspired by an existing idea. The real talent is when you can apply your creativity to make it uniquely yours.

Absolutely nothing wrong with culling an idea from a pre-existing source of inspiration. Especially if that source of inspiration is the X-Men series. theres Not gonna be a much better place to get ideas from than Prof X's school.

Hmm. Yeah the similarities with the X-men were pretty glaring. And the story told me a bit much (As opposed to letting me discover as time went on). Was all this information really necessary for the reader to know? It just reminded me of a back cover of a book, more than a prologue. Usually it's a good idea to plunge the reader into mystery or action without explinations, letting the reader discover this new worlds as the stroy develops...But those are jsut some thoughts (it does ask for a critical review).

Anyhow, otherwise I kindof like your writing style. it's crisp and easy.

Now I'll go and check out the next chapter.

Nothing wrong with pulling from the X-Men. They were a sweet bunch of guys wearing oddly colored tights. Nothing wrong with that at all. But anyway, I like this and now I am going to go read Chapter one then ready Chapter 2 Tuesday because I am running out of applauses and won't be at a computer again until Tuesday, so there you go. Good Luck and keep writing. I hope the rest is just as good.

Ok... See Henry... The thing is... Yes I did pull some stuff from X Men, I just like the idea of super heroes. Have you read the next two chapters?? If not, then maybe that will clear things up...

Wait a minute...have you heard of X-Men? I'm not saying you can't write a story in the realm of an existing idea, but:

    1. Mutant high school
    2. Puberty causing mutational changes to become apparent
    3. Good mutants/bad mutants

You say this story has been stuck in your head for two months, and it may have been, but I just find it a little hard to believe that this story is completely out of your own mind.
