England, the early seventeen hundreds. Taxes and the Kings greed had all but destroyed the country. People were turned out of their homes and estates for the lack of money to pay taxes and fees. Men were imprisoned and finally hung because of their inability to pay their debts. Women were thrown into the streets or managed to get to Fleet Street to make a penny or two from the sailors and men who worked the ships at sea.4
Lolly Cox was one such woman, she and her older sister Maye
worked for a Lady Of Consequence. The Lady was a torturous
mistress. Her favorite punishment was a hard pinch on the arm or buttocks of the offender. She was impossible to please and trusted no one, because she was not trust worthy herself. Among her many servants she had taken many lovers. Once sated they were dismissed with out recommendations. Her Maids were aware of every thing in her life. From her lovers to the place she kept her jewelery.5
Lolly knew where she kept her not so favorite jewels. She was counting on these jewels to get her passage on any ship she could get to the colonies. Maye begged her not to try to go. If she was apprehended she would be sent to prison to die, or worse. Lolly was determined to go, she slipped away one day
to the pier to find out what it would cost to get away. Lolly was a handsome miss, eyes which changed with the ocean, hair the color of amber honey,a completion like fresh cream. She was of
medium height and weight, buxom with slim hips and legs. And she was intelligent, able to read and write.6
She went first to the Sea Hawk, the best looking of the ships.
The caption looked at her with a predators eye. She would sell at a good price on the black market from China. There was always a market for blue eyed, yellow haired young girls.
When she ask him the price he gave her a minimal figure.
She was surprised but promised to return with the money on the day of departure.7
Lolly could hardly wait to get to her sister to tell her the surprising news. Maye was a woman of the world, she had been on her own since she was twelve. She begged her sister to reconsider, and think of the things which could happen to her.
Lolly would not listen, she was set on leaving for the free world.
She had believed all the things she had read about freedom and the chance to start a new life. To her the colonies were the land of milk and honey, teeming with wealthy men to chose a husband from.8
The other maids started to help her gather things to wear. There were trunks of clothes in the attics of the big house. The things would never be missed. When ask about what she would do for money she told them she had it in hand. Every day her bundle grew, she had some very good dresses, shoes and under wear.
The maids thought she might need some stronger dresses and shoes which they took the liberty to supply.9
Departure day arrived on a Friday. Lolly took the suitcase,
and a bundle of food to the Sea Hawk. The captain remembered her and welcomed her aboard. He was astonished when Lolly opened her purse to remove the jewels. She had no idea of the
worth of them but the captain knew exactly what they would bring on the market. He chose three pieces for her passage and one more for a better berth. The room she was given was quiet
comfortable, with a soft bed and a water closet. She also had access to the captions dinning room.10
Just as the Sea Hawk took to the water,a band of police tried to board. The captain knew who they were after and called for full speed ahead and had the police removed from the ship. Once the ship was under way England's law had no rights to the passengers. Lolly knew of some kind of disturbance but had no
idea the Lady had sent police for her.11
The storms rolled the ship as lightning flashed and thunder rambled through the ship. Lolly had a brief look at the rolling waves and was frightened for her life. She knew no one on the ship to go to for comfort. The others in first class had ignored
her in the dinning room. She was dressed as well as they but there must have been some indication she was not worthy of their company. Lolly did not walk about the ship, she did not want to see what had been pictured for her by her sister. The
part she had permission to use was kept clean and free of drunks.12
After many weeks of home sickness, fear of the unknown colonies, and frightening storms the Sea Hawk reached Gooch
County, Virginia. Some departed but others were bound for other colonies. Lolly was glad she had stayed in Virginia. It was a beautiful country, with rich green mountains and calm blue rivers. Lolly found a man who gave her cash for some of her
jewels. He ask no questions and she gave no information. With money in her purse Lolly found a place to live. A boarding house with lovely rooms and meals served three times a day.
There she met a man from France, His name was Jonathan De bray. His brother had died on the voyage and was buried at sea. 13
De bray bought many acres of land, and built a handsome house fit for the large family he planned to have with Lolly. Furniture
was ordered from France, maids were hired to keep the house in peak condition. Jonathan loved gardens and had men to make
plots for blooming shrubs, and flower plants. Mostly he was interested in roses such as his mother had in her garden and plant which would survive the mild winters in Virginia. 14
Jonathan ask Lolly to be his wife when the house was ready to move into. She had expected to be ask but never the less was no less pleased. Her answer was Yes, the marriage was to be in one week. The ladies of the county were hard pressed to get every thing prepared for the marriage. They were to use the rose garden which was in full bloom. No roses were cut, accents were made with lengths of white silk and pearl hanging a piano
had been brought in for the occasion.15
The marriage over with rings and vows exchanged, the new couple danced on the lawn.Lolly's white dress billowed in the cool evening breeze, Jonathan removed the combs from her hair to see the sun on the length of it, it glistened like old gold. Jonathan was a tall red headed man with powerful shoulders and a narrow waist. He was known to be unusually physically strong. In that moment he was reduced to only the love he held for his wife. He kissed her for the first time, a kiss long and passionately deep. Then the music started to play and the wine and food was served. It was a story book day.
16A Sonnet Reincarnation17
A girl was taken in an Indian raid
In the night they had come unexpected,
The girl, Flow was taken from her home so afraid
She had been in her bed unprotected18
Flow, was forced to become a warriors bride
Her clothes were tanned by others, soft as light
The bed was fur from new buffalo hide
She learned to sign, daily prayed to the sight19
Children were born, mother died berthing a girl
The boys were braves followed father much older
The girl had white skin hair golden with curl
Mother died, old to give birth, girl treated colder20
One day a white man saw her and stole her
She went happy, mothers miracle did occur. 21
