Surrogate Mother

She began as a sister
Maybe not loving, but a sister all the same1

Father's a driver for bid freight money
But they're still struggling at this game2

Mother's got nothing but brains and talent
And never got her moment of fame3

House is falling apart beneath their feet
They're all the ones to blame4

Mother got a job as a salesclerk
While Father's still away
Family's still fighting to hold it together
Not sure if things can be okay
Times get tougher and they get rougher
So unsure of the world today5

So babysitting a brother
Turns into being a mother
Maybe not loving, but a mother all the same6

Cleaning and cooking for these mouths to feed
Her hands are rougher and begin to bleed
So many things swell beneath
The suface of this surrogate mother
The mother that is me.

Author notes

I wrote this early this morning after me and my sister were talking about all the stuff I do because most of my parents work. It sounds kind of 'emo' but it wasn't meant to, more like just stating reality.

I like it, sort of, despite all of the stuff wrong with it and I hope you do to.

Happy Halloween!

How sad it is when a person has to stumble from their childhood straight into the adult world with adult reponsabilities. It requires too much streagnth then should be expected from anyone, being denied that transitional period. Wonderful wonderful poem, probably my favorite. My favorite line was:

    "So babysitting a brother
    Turns into being a mother
Maybe not loving, but a mother all the same"

Very very powerful and made the poem if you ask me.
