Autumn Senses

The sound of Autumn is soft and melodious
As the leaves crackle beneath the rythm of my shoes
I am happy hum a song from memory1

The smell of Autumn is musky and old
Like the ancient books hidden away in a library
I am made to exhale slowly to keep it in my nostrils2

The look of Autumn is subdued and sleepy
Once I've tucked myself under my heap of blankets
I am forced to leave the light on one extra moment3

The taste of Autumn is mellow and sweet
Lingering in my mouth long after the Summer harvest is over
I am willing to savor another bite of it's feast4

The feel of Autumn is warm and cold
A contraditction of temperature and defiance of nature
I am eager to turn the heater up once more

Author notes

The second workshop at the Writers' Conference was "Mapping the Senses in Poetry". We were told to write a poem from one of five prompts using sensory imagery.

I wrote about Autumn and decided to make it five stanzas, each one using a different sense.

Happy Halloween!
