Waiting Room Reprieve

White-washed walls 1

And scuff-marked floors2

The smell of amonia and piss3

The still of the silence4

As families sit waiting5

For a barrage of bad news6

Wheel-chairs skid by7

With patients waiting8

For their new beginning9

Tears and still faces10

Some get what they want11

And others do not12

But we get our one last reprieve

Author notes

I went to a writers' workshop with my Creative Writing Class on Friday and the first one I went to was called "Creating Tension in Poetry". We were told to free-write a poem about a pivotal moment in our lives. I don't think I followed the directions so well, but this is what resulted and I kind of like it. It's about one of the many times I've sat in a waiting room during one of my grandmother's many surgeries.

Happy Halloween!

This is very good, I'm so glad you have posted again. This is very descripive and paints a realistic picture as to what it is like. I am sorry that it comes from real experience though. I hope your grandma gets well. Great poem.
