Dear Diary,
My name is Kathie Liffen, and I come from Texas. I'm twelve years old, and have long blonde hair and green eyes. My mum gave me this diary for my birthday (which was two months and three days ago) and insisted I write in it. You may be wondering why I'm writing in it now, well here's why.
My little brother William has the H1N1 and I'm really scared. I have to wear a mask around the house so I don't catch the flu, and I can't go to school. I have to stay in my room for most of the day. My family can't afford to bring William to a hospital. They can't afford a shot for me either.
Also, my best friend Elise has become diagnosed with cancer. She emails me, but she says she doesn't feel the same. I'm really scared diary, can you please give me advice?
Your friend,
Kathie

Dear Diary,
William got really sick last night. He threw up a lot, and got a 105 fever. My mom said that we had to take him to a hospital or he would die. She told me I had to give in all my money, which I was saving so I could buy a new toaster for mum. I gave her all $34.66, saving two dollars for myself. I put them under one of my books for future use.
Daddy stayed home with me while mum brought William to the hospital. He tried playing games with me, but I could see he was worried. Mum gave a call around 1:20 A.M on October 16th and said we had to meet her at the hospital. I was really nervous and my daddy and I sped to the hospital. When we got there the doctors told us the chances of William surviving were 19%. He's REALLY sick right now, and I'm REALLY scared.
Your friend,
Kathie

Dear Diary,
William passed away last night at 12:03. He was the strongest little boy, always saying, "I am stronger than a shark. ROAR!" But then last night at about 11:00, he said, "I am weaker than an ant, Kathie. I'm gonna die, Kathie. I'm not stronger than a shark, Kathie. I wanna live, Kathie."
I told him he would be alright, but he said, "Kathie, you know I'm not gonna be all right. I'm gonna die, Kathie."
I cried at his words, until the moment he said, "I'm dying, Kathie." He groaned and turned over on the pillow, his chest not moving anymore. His eyes were all glassy and scary. The doctor announced he had passed away.
Mum and Daddy had got really upset last night. Now at home, mum won't eat anything. She won't even drink water! I'm scared diary! And Elise called this morning, she said she didn't feel good.
Help me diary!

Dear Diary,
I followed mum outside this morning. She walked over to the Kingswan bridge this morning, and whispered some inaudible words. She cried about William, and then stretched her arms wide, put her toes on the rim of the bridge, and leaned over. She fell into the water with a splash. I jumped in and tried saving her, but I couldn't find her. Diary, I lost my mum.
When I got home I told Daddy about what happened. He cried and hugged me really close, telling me to stay calm. Some police came to our house and asked us questions, but Daddy was lost for words.
Daddy told me that he would move us to a cottage near the beach. I don't want to go there, diary! I'm SO SCARED of life!
Kathie
