"What was the best day of your life?"1
For some people, that's a hard question. Either they've never had a good day in their life, or their whole life has been a series of good days. For me, the answer to that question is a no-brainer.2
February 12, 2009.3
Some may ask, "What's so special about that date?" or, "How do you remember that to the day?" Well, to them, I say, "It's a long story.4
Those words - those four simple words - are enought to weed out all of those people who don't really care, and were just asking to seem as though they were interested, and to be polite. Plus, those who truly want to know will lend an ear for me to tell my story.5
So reader, I tell you this...6
It's a long story.

You accomplish your goal of leaving the reader to wonder what happens next. I think it's wonderful that the date you remember is one of happiness, I always remember dates of trauma and forget the happy days, so it leaves me with hope. I look forward to finding out what exactly was so important about this date.

Thanks! And yes, I've noticed that too. People just always seem to remember sad dates, don't they?

I like that. It's good, yet I don't know what to make of it yet. What's the long story? I WANT MORE.

Thanks. And you will get more. This is just the prologue... I usually like to keep the reader guessing in the prologue so they'll actually read the story.
The long story, in case you can't already tell, is the story itself.

Oh, that's a GREAT prologue! I love it. I want more of this, and soon.
It sounds like it could be an amazing story!
