Have you ever stood outside on a cliff while it was raining? The water is cold when it first touches your skin, but then it relaxes you. The sun isn't out to blind you or give you a sun burn. And the cliff has a perfect view of the city you live in. When I die and am cremated, this is where I want my ashes to be scattered. Dying is such a long process. I can't wait for the day when it finally comes.1
I'm dying.2
That's what my doctor had told me this morning. That was the reason I was standing on that cliff in the rain. "You have a brain tumor," he told me,"You only have a few months." It's funny how doctors always say the same thing when you're dying. 'You have such and such and you only have this amount of time to live. I'm sorry.' I've always wondered why the doctors are sorry. They aren't the ones dying. They don't have to wonder if it will hurt or the exact time your body will just give up.3
The rain soothes me. When I stand in the rain I feel as if all my problems just...disappear. The city appears so bleak and small from atop the cliff. The people go about their daily lives not thinking about the day they will die.4
I sigh and take one last look at the city. It seems like such an insignificant place now. I turn back and jump into my old red pickup. When I turn the key and the engine begins to hum, I know it's time to go home. After all, with death comes a lot of future planning. I roll down the window and let the rain brush against my face one last time, "So long cliff. We'll met again soon, when someone comes to scatter my ashes and let me rest in peace."
