Larry Winston, PhD - Pilot

"Prologue - Saturday Night Influenza"1

It was dark night, but the city of LA was still open. Drunks roamed the streets, cops prowling for the trouble-making ones. The nightclubs were full.2

"Hey, babes, you not coming out? That guy's been giving you the eye." Kate smiled. "Nah, you pull him."3

. "Come on, Darling, he wants you. Play hard to get," Kate's friend, Beth, giggles, half-drunk, the smell of vodka on her breath.4

. "Okay, I'll be, like, two seconds."5

. Out in the bar area, Larry watched the women's bathroom, waiting for someone to pull. Sitting by him, Remmy sat by him. "I told you you might have fun."6

. "I'm not having fun. I'm making the most of it." Remmy laughed. "You like this girl. Ask her to dance."7

. "Remmy, no."8

. "Look," Remmy says, eyeing Kate leaving the nightclub bathroom, "Buy her a vodka and ask her for a dance."9

. Kate sat down near Remmy and Larry. "I'm nervous, Beth."10

. "You'll be fine, just imagine that he's a good friend of yours."11

. Kate got up and sat by Larry, a guy sitting by Beth, failing to chat her up. "So, you wanna dance?" Kate asks.12

. Remmy nudges Larry. "Uh, sure. Why not?"13

. She lead him up to the dance floor, they both smiled. Larry feeling more and more nervous by the minute. "Just a second."14

. Larry walked into the bathroom, washing his face with the cold tap. Remmy followed in, grinning. "Couldn't handle it, could ya?"15

. "I guess not. I'm leaving."16

. "What're you gonna tell her?"17

. "Um... I've got an emergency at the hospital?"18

. A scream flooded the nightclub and the noise went dead. Larry and Remmy ran out, to see what happened. Kate was on the floor, screaming.19

. "What happened to her?" asked one of the bystanders.20

. "I know. She danced with a doctor," Larry replied.21

. Remmy came over to the girl, crying on the floor, holding her right foot. "You know that emergency you told me about?"22

. "I know. Careful what you wish for."23
