We walked all the rest of the afternoon and we made camp. I found sleep easy that night I suppose because my most dear friend was watching over me. In the middle of the night I awoke to the sounds of deep heavy growls. I covered my head real quick. I dont know why I guess because I progressed back to the second grade. Back to when if you heard a sound in the dark you covered your eyes thinking the boogie man wouldn't get you. Well The growls got louder and more vicious. I uncovered my head just enough to see what was making those terrifying sounds. I looked up to see my friend standing over the top of me as though to protect me from some unseen threat. I was surely dreaming, there was know way I could be in any real kind of danger. As always that is never the case for me. I heard a big thud behind me. My worst nightmare becomes a reality. I slowly lift my head and turn it to look and to my horrified eyes I see the most grousome sight. A huge, gigantic, scary, evil looking, blood thirsty bear was standing about ten feet away from me. She was steadily walking straight for us. It didn't even faze her that a big white wolf was standing there in her way. The wolf lashes out at her and snaps at her feet, when she almost steps on my head. So she lunges at him and strikes him across the back. He lets out a yelp and then falls to the ground. I run over to see about him but even before I get there he is back on his feet ready for another go at it. He jumps on her back and bites down on the scruff of her neck. She hits the ground so hard I swear they felt the ground shake all the way in China. Somehow he had knocked her unconsicious. My friend was thrown from her back and landed on the ground on all fours. He starts to go back at her I guess to kill her so that she wouldn't follow us. He got about half way over to her when it hit me. " Is this what I've become? Am I just going to sit and watch a living breathing creature be killed for something that could hve been avoided?" " No, no I'm not, she doesn't deserve to die not like this." I walked in front of him and wraped my arm around her head and I simply told him "No, she doesn't have to die, we are safe now lets just go." 1
I quickly gathered my things and we walked away. I still to this day don't know how I found my way through the dark. Yes I did have a flash light but at the time I really didn't want to draw attention to myself in the middle of the night. I just had to trust my wolf, in that he was going in the right direction. Even though it was dark out, I could see him. How could I miss pure whiteness in pitch blackness. I probably wouldn't have been able to see him if the sky was not as beautifully lit with stars as it was. We stoped at dawn on a hill over looking most of the forest. It was so beautiful that morning. There was a soft wind blowing in the trees. The birds had started their singing of various songs. The lark would start the singing off and then it was like a synphony of violins and cellos joined in. It was very nice. I sat down and watched some deer play gracefully; weaving in and out of the trees. The mist was rolling off the mounains asuring us of a beautiful sunrise. The sun was coming up now just over the mountains. I came over and sat down to look. My friend came up and sat right next to me like a loyal dog. I sat there wondering why he hasn't left me and why he didn't try to kill me when I first found him. I didn't understand it how in the world could a creature like a wolf be so kind towards a human when they have the worst reputation. I guess it is like what people say, you can't judge a book by its cover meaning that if I wouldn't have looked into his eyes that day I probably would have turned around and ran back home. I glance back over at hm and he's starring at the sunrise. The sun was hitting him so lightly, it made him look as though immortal like a ghost or a spirit. "that's it," I said softly to myself. " I'll call you Spirit." As I sat there watching Spirit, I thought to myself that this could actually be the happiest I've ever felt in my whole life. 2
Just after the sunrise I heard a faint whine.I guess Spirit must have heard it too because he stood up, looked at me, and took off. We ran about a hundred yards and we found the most adorible, cute, sweet baby bear. It was really young, it didn't look older than at least six weeks old. It was barely old enough to be off of the mothers milk. "Where is her mother?" This question was of course pointed towards myself, I like to call it thinking out loud. Spirit heard me and ran to my side. He looked up at me and in his eyes I can see that we already knew the mother. He smelled the baby and then darted off into the woods. I tried to keep up but that baby was much too heavy for me I couldn't hold her and run at the same time. It was taking alot of energy just for me to walk and carry her. The last time I saw spirit, he darted over the hill and then disapeared. I followed over the hill but he was nowhere to be seen. It was like he vanished into thin air. I hear a faint howl in the distance, at least a mile away. "There's no possible way that he got all the way up there in that short of a time." There I go again thinking out loud to myself. I murmur under my breath" Spirit where are you? Come on now I wish I knew where he went." Just then I glanced up and he was standing there right in front of me. That about made me cry how did he know that I was looking for him? Maybe he just felt that he left me and I needed him to lead me to the cubs mother. He led me to the baby's mother and sure enough it was the bear who I had saved from Spirit the night before. 3
You better believe she remembered us as we were walking up to her. She started growling at me when I aproached her. As I got closer I could see the damage that Spirit had caused her. There was a big gash over her left eye and she was limping terribly on her back right leg. I went slowly up to her side and she jerked her head toward me and reared up on her back two legs, the best she could, but halted as she came down to hit me. She was starring at the little baby in my arms and she began to whine. She came close to the cub and smelled it then the baby, whom I've decided to call Auroara, licked her mother whom I've decided to name Trista. I sat Auroara on the ground and Trista rubbed on her neck and you could see that she missed her daughter very much. Trista looked up at me and walked closer. She then looked me dead in the eyes and again I could see that her heart went out to me for finding her offspring. I knew at that moment that I had made another life long friend. 4
