Since the setting is rather standard, what I will try to do is list some varying ideas or concepts that might be of interest to roleplaying (within these guidelines) more in general than specifically taylored to one setting or roleplay.1
The existing creature or human who embodies spiritual ideas into their magical abilities or characteristics in general. Not something like a monestary that teaches it's monks fire magic, but an entity that as it would lean towards a religion would start to mirror the ideas it entails. 2
So for example, let's make up a simple religion that exemplifies honor, bravery, physical abilities with a sword and staff, and putting everything you have into your tasks. As this creature would study and gain more interest in that religion, instead of gaining those traits through years of devotion and practice, their body would start to adapt and adopt traits which would be effeciently formed to exhibit those abilities. In this example their arms would be strong and limber, useful for easily swinging about a heavy metal sword. Their personality would become more expressive as they'd charge forward into situations. The only explanation for why this creature operates this way is perhaps a combination of genetic and magical characteristics involving extreme adaptation (so taking the theory of evolution in our world and applying it to one where magic and fantasy can take it to extremes).3
The fun thing about this would be the interpretation of what an effecient form of those religious ideals would be (and it can be political as well, or whatever else you would want to label it). It can vary quite a lot depending on your character, and it'd give the freedom for even vast changes without a complete call for a new character. Modification would take place, but without changing who your character is (how much their inner person changes is up again to interpretation; maybe they are drawn to ideas they already agree with). 4
Potential story ideas? Anything along the ideas of controlling this creature to create perfect soldiers for your side (they'd exhibit the ideals you value in your army), dealing with the issue of living up to someone who is the perfect _______ (can you ever impress this person, how would the leader of it handle a newcomer outshining his accomplishments), maybe the odd ability for the creature to modify relatively quickly to any already learned form (they can regress and change easily to any form they've had which aids them at the moment), dealing with the potential that these creatures simply want to take over organizations and control them since no one could say they aren't the best qualified, etc.
Author notes
I hope this somewhat fits into what you were looking for, and that the idea makes sense overall and sounds interesting and different.

You catched the right idea of what I ment with the contest.
This piece gives the possibility to go several directions, and to use many different characters.
