Camp - chapter 2

Estha is in my team. She's in room 30. We walk down to the river along with the rest of our group. A woman with a silver ring through her nose and is wearing shorts and a lifejacket.1

"Alright, are you the first team to have kayaking?" She asks once we're all standing in front of her.
I nod and line up. She places a life jacket over each person's head and gives them an oar.
We have to practice on the grass with our oar just to make sure we can kayak.
The water is cold as I get into my red kayak. I'm third to get in and I wait for Estha to get in her kayak.
Once everyone has gotten in their kayak and has had a bit of a kayak up and down the river, the instuctor tells us to line all the kayaks up together so they're all facing the same way. You have to hold the person's next to you's kayak so it doesn't float away lol.
Then it's volinteers. You have to be brave and Ju Eon gets up first. He stands on one kayak at one end, and tries to run across every single kayak without falling in the river. He gets about two thirds there and then trips and down he goes into the cold water.
About five other people have a try at not falling in when running, but not one person can run across all of them without falling in. I don't dare have a go because the water will be freezing and also because when each person has fallen in, they've hit their shoulders or heads on the end of a kayak and it looks like it would really hurt.
After we walked back to our cabins after an assembly, we had half an hour to get dressed for our last activity for the day. We would have three actvities each day, but because today was only the first day we'd been here, we only had two.
My next activity was Singstar. They had specially organized Singstar after kayaking, so that you have a cold activiy (kayaking), and then a warm, inside activity (Singstar).2

Outsisde the Singstar room, there is a group of students doing the cooking activiy. They have to cook outside because there is a barbeque right there and a wooden bench next to it. They're cooknig piklets and we can smell them once they are ready. We don't get any though; it's just for that group. 3

If you're doing Singstar for an hour and a half, it can get a bit boring after about fourty-five minutes, so the parent taking us for Singstar lets us go outside if we want for a bit.
There's two trampolines outside just next to the cooking group. The trampolines are really big, circular, and built-in to the ground. There's supposed to only be one person allowed on the trampolines at all times just in case it breaks, but we were having so much fun, eight of us went on the trampoline for about half an hour. As the second activity finishes, we are allowed to stay on the trampoline. Teachers walk past and see the eight people on the trampoline, but they don't say anything because they could see we were having so much fun and didn't want to be a party-pooper. Mr Wilson even smiled and laughed as he walked past. Fifteen minutes later, Ms Magregor walks past. She scowls. "Uh," She says loudly. "ONE person allowed on the trampoline at all times, you know the rules!" Her face turns red with anger and everyone scatters off the trampoline except for the one person allowed on. I pull a face at Ms Magregor's back and go up to the cabins to find Sunee.
She's standing in the cabin doorway talking to some girls in room 30.
"Hi," I say, walking past her into the first bit of the cabin. I tell Sunee about Ms Magregor and then we sit on the bottom bunk.
The bells not going to ring for about two hours away because now is free choice.
"What do you want to do?" I ask Sunee. She shrugs and sits up on her bunk. I go into the scody camp toilets. It stinks. You don't want to know what's sitting in the bottom of one of the toilets. There's grass and watery mud all over the floor and someone's peed on the toilet seat.
I run out and back into the cabin. Vongai, Elizabeth, Ashlee and Lauren are in the main part of the cabin spraying purfume all around the room. They think it smells nice but it's really foul and is starting to give me a headache.
"You might not want to use the toilets for a while," I say to them. "It's disgusting. Go and look for yourself." Elizabeth and I go into them and she runs back with her hand over her nose.
