The Myth of Adrian the Dark One and the End of the Rainbow

There was once, before you and I, a beautiful country where humans and beings long deceased and unknown to us, thrived in harmony. All was peaceful, from the nymphs of the Forest to the giants of the Mountains to the creatures of the Sea. The gods and goddesses of the earth and sky loved and blessed this country. The sun shone bright and the grass grew lush and green. The crops were plentiful and the people wanted for nothing. The gods loved this land so much because it was a sacred and beautiful place. This land was the home to the end of the rainbow. It was many, many years ago in this land that the gods grew sad as they watched the rain fall on their favorite country. Even though they knew rain was necessary for the beauty and growth of the land, they hated to see it so dark and wet. So to help the gods and the people overcome their sorrow of the rain the gods created the rainbow and placed one end in the country. So now, after every rain the rainbow would appear and the country would be bright and magical with color.1

The Leprechauns decided that the end of the rainbow would be the perfect place to store their gold and they became the keepers and protectors of the rainbow as well as of their gold. All the people of this country knew their home was the home of the end of the rainbow and many of them even claimed they knew where it resided, but everyone made sure never to speak of it to strangers. They kept the end of the rainbow hidden so no one could try to steal it away from them.2

Next to this country there was another land, its opposite in every way. Adrian the Dark One, ruler of this dark and evil land, was jealous of the gods’ love for his neighboring country. Unfortunately for his neighbors, he knew the end of the rainbow was hidden somewhere in that land and he made an evil vow to find it and steal not only the rainbow, but the leprechaun’s gold as well. Adrian the Dark One prayed to evil gods to help him with his quest. The evil gods heard his prayers and were pleased with his plan, for if the rainbow were stolen then their hated brothers and sisters would be weak with grief and easily defeated if challenged. They gave Adrian the Dark One the power of deception and disguise so that he may walk free in his neighboring country where people knew of his evil ways.3

Adrian the Dark One moved swiftly to the beautiful country he hated knowing that every second counted. Transformed into a beautiful bird, he searched everywhere for the end of the rainbow and the shiny pot of gold that was sure to be with it. Unfortunately for him he had forgotten that you can only see the rainbow after it rains. Unfortunately for the rainbow and the leprechauns it soon started raining. When the rain cleared the most beautiful rainbow shot out across the sky and it took only a few moments for Adrian the Dark One to find its source. Looking out for leprechauns Adrian the Dark One changed back into his human form, put on his sunglasses and advanced upon the brilliantly shinning pot of gold that was hidden beneath the bright rays of color.4

Luckily an enchanted woman in the form of a deer spotted Adrian the Dark One and rushed to warn the leprechauns who were having a great feast, which was why no one was guarding the gold. The leprechauns hurried to capture Adrian the Dark One before he got away with their gold. They came upon him stuffing gold into a big, blue duffel bag. Luckily, he was unsure of how to steal the rainbow so he had started with the gold. The leprechauns, dressed in Men in Black suits an sunglasses, lunged at Adrian the Dark One and began beating him up. They bit and scratched and kicked him. They snatched his sunglass from his face and he was immediately blinded by the radiance of the rainbow and pot of gold. Unable to see or fight back Adrian the Dark One was tied up and gagged by the leprechauns until they could figure out what to do with him. 5

When the gods were informed of Adrian the Dark One’s trickery they banished him to the depths of the Underworld where he could no longer plot his evil schemes. The gods also knew that their spiteful brothers had helped Adrian the Dark One and the evil gods were cast from the heavens and turned into pigs. The enchanted deer that had first seen Adrian the Dark One was rewarded for her goodness by being transformed back into a woman. She married the handsome prince of the leprechauns and lived happily for the rest of her life. The gold was safe and, today, the rainbow continues to soar across the sky after every storm. The favorite country of the gods was safe and everyone was happy, except of course, Adrian the Dark One and some unfortunate pigs.6

Different twists and characters but it is always refreshing to remember the Rainbow and what may be at its end. Well written and thought out.

Not to detract from the story but leprechauns were solitary faries, cobblers mostly. Each hid a pot of gold not only from humans but other leprechauns as well. Never loose sight or they vanish.
