Harry Potter walked down the empty corridor with his head down and his hands in his pockets. The sky was just starting to get dark, but there were still several people awake and prowling about. Ever since the week before, when he had rid the world of Lord Voldemort once and for all, he hadn’t had a moment to himself. Around every corner, there was another person who decides to spend an hour congratulating him on what he’d done. At first, he’d found it flattering, then a little annoying, then completely irritating. Now, Harry had taken to wearing hooded sweatshirts, so people wouldn’t recognize him. Tonight, however, he felt he had to just get out. Fortunately for him, most people were either celebrating with friends or were already asleep, so he didn't meet anyone on his way up to the Astronomy Tower.1
He'd decided to go to the Astronomy Tower, since he was sure no one would be there. Being the smallest of the towers at Hogwarts, there was no use using it as a party space, but looking out onto the grounds from there, was magical. He could see groups of students and adults and teachers all celebrating in different ways. Down by the lake, he saw several Gryffindors collecting wood for a bon fire. He saw Hagrid and some of the people in the Order outside his hut, laughing and singing and clinking glasses. By the forest, a group of centaurs were heading off for a celebration hunt. They all looked so happy... so free. But at that moment, Harry was feeling the complete opposite. He felt like he’d come to a dead end, and didn’t know where to go next. He could've gone with Ginny and had his perfect fairytale ending, but during the school year she and Dean had rekindled their relationship. Kingsley had offered him a job at the ministry, which he was considering, but it didn’t feel right. His life didn’t seem to have meaning anymore. As Harry thought this, tears began to fill his eyes. 2
Right when he was about to start sobbing, he heard a girl's voice humming, and the sound was coming from the ceiling. He turned around to see none other than Luna Lovegood sitting in the rafters above him. She was dressed in dark blue pajamas, with silver stars all over them. She seemed to be very interested in her blue nail polish, and didn’t notice Harry until he called up to her.3
“Luna? What are you doing up there?” 4
She looked down at him with a wide smile. “Oh, hello Harry! What are you doing up here on this fine night?”5
“I asked you first,” he demanded, a bit agitated. He thought he was going to be alone.6
“I was just thinking,” she said in her dreamy voice, “but I can see that you’d like some privacy, so I’ll leave you alone.”7
Luna jumped down from her perch and headed for the stairs. Harry scolded himself; he shouldn’t have said that to her. She hadn’t even done anything, and she was here first. 8
"Luna, wait...” he said apologetically. She turned around and looked at him. “...you don’t have to go. I mean, there’s plenty of space up here for the both of us. We haven’t seen each other in a while, so I guess we could, I don’t know, catch up or something.” 9
Luna’s face lit up.10
“Oh Harry, I’d love to!” she exclaimed. 11
Luna sat down on the edge of the tower, letting her legs swing over the side. She patted the space next to her. Harry sat too. 12
“So, how have things been going?” she asked.13
“Fine.” Harry answered quickly. He wanted to about something other than himself for once. “I was more interested in how you were doing.”14
With that, Luna’s smile grew bigger, and her eyes sparkled. She gave Harry a bone crushing hug, which was quite uncomfortable at the angle they were sitting at.15
“No ones ever asked me how I’m doing before!” she squealed. "That's very kind of you."16
“I find that surprising.” Harry muttered sarcastically, too quiet for her to hear.17
Luna rocked back and forth while Harry watched her, expectant. 18
“Well?” he encouraged.19
She looked confused, then perked up again. “Oh, right, sorry. I’m doing exceptionally well, except....” she stopped. She had a far off look in her eyes, like she was in pain.20
“What’s wrong? ” Harry wondered.21
“It’s nothing.” Luna mumbled. She suddenly became vary interested in picking at her nail polish. 22
Harry compulsively took her hand. Their eyes met. “Are you sure?” 23
Still holding on to Harry’s hand, she said “Daddy’s been sent to Azkaban.”24
Harry gasped. All the events from his trip to her house came rushing back to him. The ministry couldn’t lock Xenophilius up for what he did. He was just father who wanted his daughter back. “I’m so sorry Luna. I had no idea...” he drifted off. He couldn’t think of anything more to say.25
Luna’s voice cracked as she spoke again, “How could this happen? He was a good man, he's my father, but now.....”26
Her eyes began to fill with tears. Harry had never seen her cry before. It made him feel strange, seeing her like this.27
“Is there anything I can do?” he asked, wanting to make her feel better.28
Luna shook her head. She let go of Harry’s hand and started picking at her nail polish again. 29
Then something came to him. He shuffled in his pockets until he found what he was looking for. It was a package of Licorice Wands Ron had bought him two days ago. He ripped the bag open and offered some to Luna. She took one.30
“Thank you.” she said, her face lighting up a little. She wiped her nose on her arm before she took a bite. 31

The two sat and talked hours. As they talked, all of Harry’s worries melted away. Harry let her know he didn’t want to talk about his adventures, so they didn’t. They talked about simple things, like school and books and jokes. Harry found himself enjoying Luna’s company greatly, as they started talking about more personal things. He told her about Sirius, his parents, and the Order. She seemed very interested in all of it, and didn’t interrupt him once. She simply nodded, looking straight into his eyes. He started telling her about how his life felt meaningless, but she stopped him.33
“Your life’s not meaningless,” she stated simply.34
“I have no responsibilities, just years and years of free time with nothing to do,” he complained.35
“You do have a responsibility Harry, and a very important one in my opinion,” Luna said.36
“What’s that?”37
“Being a godfather,” she said.38
Harry’s mind stopped. All this time, he had been trying to push everything from his old life away. Including Teddy. Now that Tonks and Remus were gone, Harry was all he had left. Some godfather he was turning out to be.39
“I completely forgot about him,” Harry admitted, surprised at himself. “I don’t even know what happened to him!” He felt awful.40
Luna took his hand and gave it a quick, reassuring squeeze. “You’ll get it all figured out. You always do.”41
He smiled at her, hoping she was right. She looked off into the distance, seeming to be gazing at the stars. Suddenly, she looked down at her watch and gasped.42
“It’s almost 5 am! We’ve been talking all night! I don’t know when we’ll get to sleep now!” she exclaimed. 43
Harry took her hand again. “Don’t worry, we’ve got all the time in the world.”44
She smiled. It was the most beautiful smile he’d ever seen. As he looked into her eyes, a thought came into his mind.45
“Luna, when I start taking care of Teddy, I don’t know if I can do it alone,” he paused. “I know he’s just a baby, but I’ve heard they can be a lot of work. If I ever needed help, do you think you could.... maybe....”46
Luna's gazed at Harry with a very happy look in her eye. “Of course I’ll help you, Harry! There’s nothing else I’d rather do.”47
“Thank you.” he sighed. He didn’t know why, but he felt relieved. 48
The two looked at each other for a long time, saying nothing. It wasn’t an awkward silence at all. It was loving and warm, like their new found love for each other. Luna leaned closer to him, her lips slightly parted. When their faces were just inches from each other, she whispered, “I think this is the part where we kiss.”49
Harry smiled. “I think it is.” 50
When he kissed her, it felt different. A good kind of different. Like a new beginning. After a while, they finally broke a part. 51
“I’m tired,” Luna said, yawning52
“Hopefully not of me.” Harry joked. She smiled, but didn't laugh. “Do you want me to walk you back to your common room?” 53
Luna shook her head groggily. “I think I’ll just stay up here. The other Ravenclaws should be getting up soon, and it’ll be noisy.”54
“Oh, okay,” he said. "I'll see you tomorrow then." 55
Luna smiled and waved her wand, making a small yet very comfortable-looking sleeping bag appear. She conjoured up a pillow as well, and laid down.56
Harry started walking away, but then turned back. “Luna?” he whispered quietly, but no response came. He noticed her eyes were closed; she was asleep. Smiling, Harry walked out of the tower, and down to the common room, and climbed in bed without changing. He felt better than he ever had before, even after the moment he destroyed Voldemort once and for all. He felt loved and appreciated and understood, more than ever before. And for now, that was enough.

Author notes
I know most people don't appreciate the whole Harry/Luna thing, but I think they'd be great together. Yes, I understand that Harry ends up with Ginny, but I think this way is great too, though I wouldn't want it to be how it actually happened. It's just fun to write about.

Good write. I loved it.

Hey, I think Harry/Luna is a fantastic pairing. I am of the opinion that Harry/Ginny was just a bit cliche in the books, I mean, who actually marries their childhood sweetheart and lives happily ever after... especially with probable post-traumatic stress. Well... to each their own.
You write very well. I'd look again in a couple of spots in the first part of the story. Your tenses alternate from past to present, but overall I found the story very enjoyable.

Thanks! I do sometimes have a problem with switching tenses, so I'll look at that as soon as possible. And I'm with you on the fact that most people don't marry their childhood sweethearts.

Good job Ellie! I liked that a lot! It was well-written with only a few mistakes. I do think that Harry and Luna would be good togther...and yea. Harry would have some free time on his hands after the defeat of Voldemort
