Chapter One 1
My vision was reducing leaving a black haze licking act the edge’s of my mind. Death is a peculiar feeling like falling backwards and sinking threw water. The farther you get, the dimmer the light becomes. Kade’s face danced behind my eyes. Panic blossomed throughout my body. Amnesia ate at my brain, as I forced myself to recall where I was. The million dollar question. Death is easy; life was harder. 2
My senses wavered before returning. The harsh acidic smell of bile made my stomach tight with anxiety. “Why can’t I see?” My body screamed at itself. 3
“So nice of you to join us Jeremy.” His voice wrapped around me like velvet. The wheels of logic turned in my head; a voice so beautiful could only accompany something as evil. Vampire, the word screamed threw every fiber of my being. A sharp spasm of pain made my face twist to the side. “Are you ready to see what I’ve done to your heart, oh precious Jeremy.” My vision violently returned as the vampire ripped off the cloth he had was using to blind me. I blinked a few times correcting the harsh white light that had stolen my sight momentarily. Kade was tied to a chair across the room, only then was I aware of the whimpering escaping his gagged mouth, and shut eyes. 4
“Kade,” I screamed, praying that the ropes that bound my wrists to the chair I was tied in would break. 5
“Oh Jeremy, not such a big strong vampire hunter without your sacred blade are you?” The vampire said as he laughed sardonically. 6
“I will kill you if you harm him anymore, release him and I will spare you.” I said as the tears fell down my cheek in quick succession. The room was bathed in white, painfully so. 7
“Kill me? I’m already dead! You took the only light left in my life and extinguished it. Jezabell was a newborn; you thought you could take her from me and not face my wrath?” He said as the amusement drained out of his voice.8
“Jezabell was a murderer she had no control over her thirst, she killed innocent people; she had to be stopped.”9
“At the cost of a few lives you ended hers now I’m here to end yours.” Kade’s eyes shot open bulging with the effort to scream; fresh tears threatening to pour out. 10
Don’t worry though I’m not here to harm you physically, no I’m much too sadistic for hat. An eye for an eye, or would a heart for a heart be better suited?”11
“Don’t touch him you son of a bitch!” I screamed as the vampire ended the distance between us in seconds and slapped me so hard my mind wheeled violently out of control. 12
“Jeremy!” Kade screamed, he some how managed to push the gag past his mouth, enough to scream. I pulled my head up with extraneous effort, trying to meet his eyes. 13
“I love you Kade, I will save you, somehow…” I whispered. 14
“Well isn’t that sweet? Do you love him now” the masked vampire said as he plunged a small surgical knife into Kade’s leg. Releasing frantic screams.15
“So beautiful, aren’t they Jeremy; remember Jezabell’s screams as her body rebuked your knife and turned her body into ash?” 16
He removed the knife, took aim and cut Kade’s shirt off. “This one is quiet beautiful even I must admit, for a mortal. How would it hurt you if I defaced every inch of his body?” He slid the knife deep into the meat of his pectoral muscle and dragged it painfully across; releasing torrents of blood as he did. “Do you love him now Kade? Now that your blood is what ebbs on to the floor?”17
Kade faintly whispered “yes,” the vampire stabbed Kade over and over, cutting and slicing; making mince meat of his torso. But never hitting deep enough to kill. Kade’s screams were decrescendo, becoming quieter with every slash. 18
The vampire took Kade’s knee and twisted it extracted the popping sound only a jo8int can deliver. Kade’s screams became frantic as he withered in his chair, like a trapped animal that I couldn’t help. 19
I screamed over and over thrashing my head back and fourth trying to break the ropes. The harsh biting of the ropes didn’t stop me, in fact I used the pain, and wiggled my wrists harder until blood poured down my hands like stigmata. I screamed at the vampire until my lungs threatened to stop. 20
The vampire snaked his tongue over Kade’s shredded chest, and for a moment I was amazed, the skin was knitting back together, vampiric salvia releases endorphins in human blood which aid and quicken the healing process. I could almost here Mr. Portcelli lecturing about vampiric blood being the live saver of the century. He was healing Kade to break him, the knowledge slammed into my chest; I had to be freed. I grabbed my thumb with my other fingers and popped it out of place. The vampire’s head was still down lapping the pools of blood, before they threatened to congeal. I slipped my hand out of the roped confines. I was working on freeing my other hand when Kade’s screams brought my eyes back to him. 21
The vampire had his head yanked backwards exposing his neck as he perched behind him eyeing me. 22
“Tisk tisk, Jeremy,” he said.23
“With my dying breath I will see the light escape your eyes as you die in my arms. I will kill you!” I spat. 24
“perhaps, but your beloved will still be dead as well.” He laughed as he shoved his fingers into Kade’s chest. There was a second when Kade’s eyes filled with confusion at the unknowing of what had happened. The vampire yanked his heart out, and held it in his hands as it pumped blood out of the remaining vessels. He raised it as an offering, and sank his fangs into Kade’s heart and tossed it to the ground. It was then that Kade’s body slumped forward, he was dead. 25
It was suddenly overbearing. There wasn’t any rescuing Kade; not even a vampire could endure so much physical infliction. The love of my life was dead. My vision faltered and everything faded to black. Sinking into the abyss, I could feel my heart loose its rhythm. 26
