Do You Want to Die? Prolouge

He broke up with me, let me just get that out there. I did not break his heart, nor did he break mine. So we were done, set to move on, and basically forget about each other. Just another relationship that did not work out, right?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It was the first week or so of school, everything was new and as it always seems at first, way too complicated. Fun and all, what with seeing all of your friends again, but also a drag. No one Quinn was friends with wanted to be there, so they joined back up in mutual misery.
Of course there were more up sides to coming back. Boys were always high on Quinn's list, probably playing a bigger part as she got older. But now the thought of boys was not so appealing, like it usually was. She couldn't figure out exactly why, either. But she had this nagging feeling, her ex-boyfriend, Cavan had something to do with it.1

Cavan knew he was perverted, but there didn't seem to be anything he could do about it. He hadn't exactly tried to escape it, but he had thought about it. That's why he thought he would be doing his ex-girlfriend a favor by breaking up with her. Quinn had never understood his humor, and sometimes Cavan thought she had only been drawn in by his looks. Cavan thought about a lot of things like that.
But lately he had realized that he missed Quinn. They had only gone out for a month or so, but she seemed to be everything he needed. Cavan had once thought he might even love her. But she never returned those feelings. Sure, Quinn liked him, but there was a big difference, and it became obvious.2

So Cavan went along and broke up with her, saying it was best for the both of them, if he let go. Quinn did, and she moved on easily, that part was also obvious. She never gave him any more than an occasional polite smile when they passed in the halls.
But Cavan didn't let go, he told everyone, including himself, that he had. But on the inside, his want for Quinn grew increasingly stronger.3
