You think you do but you don't (14)

The tardy bell rang as soon as we got inside. Without a word we both split up and went to our seats. My seat was on the other side of class; Where the windows were. I was second to last in my row. Dave's seat was in the middle. Fourth seat from the front.1

"Okay class take out your homework and pass it to the back." Mrs. Lowella announced. Filling the class with of zippers unzipping, straps and buttons coming undone, and the ruffling of papers.2

Uninterested in what she said next I casted my attention out the window. Thinking about how much I'd rather be outside than in here. How much fun it would be to be out there with May. To hear her laughing. To talk about nonsense that would sound so sweet under that tree. Our tree. Just like we do when it's just us at her house in the back with the big oak tree.3

"Ahem!" I heard the teacher clear her throat making me jump slightly.4

"Since you seem to be so bored why don't you go and do problem number four." She added.5

"Uh mm....Four?" I said nervously taking a glance at the white board. "Okay." I added seeing as number four was the last problem on there undone. I swallowed hard and pushed away from my seat. It was the hardest one there.6

As I got to the white board I stood and stared at this thing. It was filled with numbers, letter, and algebraic symbols. I didn't know where to start. Give me two plus two I can figure it out fine. Give me calculus and it's like I'm trying to learn English for the first time.7

I could fill myself breaking a cold sweat. My mouth was dry and my fingers seem to be trembling. I reached for the expo marker. My heart began to race. I don't know this stuff. I did my best to break it down and what not but about half way through I lost myself. So I put the marker down, walked back to my seat, and acted like I really solved it.8

"Did anyone get a different answer?" She asked.9

And what do you know? More than half the class raised their hands. She gave me a stern look. I shrugged at her.Right about now I was wishing I had paid attention in my previous math classes. I saw her let out a sigh and she shook her head. Was she disappointed?
She then asked for someone to correct my work.10

I watched as he got started on the problem. Suddenly I felt a vibration in my pocket causing me to jerk in my seat. I pulled my phone from my pocket. I say that it was a picture message from May. I opened it to see that it was a picture of May and her close cousin Natt in their physics class. I scrolled down to find a text message attached.11

'I miss u see u soon. ' I smiled at the words.12

"Hand it over." Mrs. Lowells voice boomed above me, once again spooking me.13

"I'll put it away." I said in a pleading voice. I knew all eyes were on me.14

"Hand it over or I'll have security come get it and bring it to the VP." She threatened.15

I thought about my options and decided it was best to hand it over. With one quick motion I exited out of the text before giving it to her. "Here."16

"Thank you." She said and walked back to her desk. "I'll be seeing you after class." She informed me as she placed my phone on her desk.17

I sat back in my seat. My brows drawn together. In my head I was ing the crap out of her. How dare she take my phone away.18

'I'll see you after class.' I mocked inside my head. 'Pssh, get real . I still aint guna pay attention!'19

"You know I'm not very happy with the attitude you show up to my class with?" She said sitting on top of her desk facing me. I stood before her.21

"Just give me back my cell." I said glaring at her my hand held out. Palm up, waiting.22

Ignoring me she said. "First you come to my class nearly tardy everyday; Then you don't pay attention in class; You don't put effort in your homework; And now this?" She nagged, waving my phone at me.23

I rolled my eyes at her. " Yeah, yeah, yeah. I heard it all before. Just give me my cell. I kinda got some place to be."24

"Look at this!" She said waving my classwork in my face with the other hand. "You call this work?"25

Insulted I shot back. "Hey I put effort into it. Maybe you should teach better then I wouldn't have to work so hard."26

"FIVE." emphasis on the five. "unfinished problems! TEN blank ones! This is what you call effort? With your attitude you'll never make it in life."27

"Listen lady." I said I could feel my anger rising. "I don't give a ok? Make it or not it's none of you business! Give me back my phone before I tell the principal that you get off on putting students down." I threatened her.28

"Fine take it. But that cell will do you know good if you don't have the brains to use it." She said her arms crossed.29

I could feel my blood boil. I wanted to giver her a slap or two right about then. But I didn't. I grabbed my phone and made for the door. 30

"It's my life! My brain! My phone! I'll do whatever the hell I want with it you old hag! Go with your own life and leave mine alone!" I said before storming down the hall.
