There once was a young boy, who was born with natural artistic ability. He loved to draw everything he saw and some things he only imagined. It came to pass that on his tenth birthday his Mother held a birthday party. All his relatives came from near and far to attend the celebration. The boy was excited to have the opportunity to show off his drawings.2
One of his Uncles was a noted professor at a large University. The boy had grown up hearing stories about his Uncle the professor, for the family regarded him as a genius and would often cite his many accomplishments.3
The professor was having a grand time talking and drinking wine with his brothers and sisters, whom he hadn't seen in years. The young boy was feverishly showing off his works of art. When it came time to show his Uncle his drawings, the professor was caught up in conversation and wasn't really paying attention. He gave the portfolio a quick glance and said, "Oh, these are nice. Perhaps one day you will attend the University and learn how to be a real artist."4
The boy took his portfolio and put it away. He never really felt like drawing again.5

Author notes
This lesson can be applied to adults too, but it is the children who are most impressionable. They form their beliefs about the world and themselves through outside imput. These beliefs can either limit them or give them the self confidence to do anything.

its a story all of us can relate to. i mean we all have been through this phase in life where we have shown off our skills but there was no one to appreciate us.

That was so sad. I feel sorry for the little boy. Also, that's the reason why parents put their kids' drawings up on the refrigerator as a work of art.
