Bob McFuddy walked out to the barns early one Saturday morning because he knew it was time for Mildred the orange sheep to have her lambs. He had no idea what to expect since he had borrowed George Duddy’s cranberry ram last fall. Bessie the green cow and her yellow calf Moo-Moo called out a gentle greeting as he passed by.1
Ever since the little accident over at Three-Mile Island the animals in this area had been coming out in interesting colors. It seemed that the colors had sort of stabilized now after all these years and the cattle were shades of yellow and green and the sheep varied from fire engine red to purple to pumpkin orange.2
As McFuddy passed under the chestnut tree he heard loud chattering. He reached in his pocket and pulled out four peanuts. Locating the purple squirrel family all perched on their various branches he began tossing the peanuts in the air; all but the littlest caught it on the first try. Three tries later the last peanut was caught and Gertrude the golden goat bleated out approval, or maybe it was just a cry for attention, it was hard to tell with Gertrude.3
From the door of the barn Bob could hear the sound of not one but two new young lambs, already in full voice. He hastened his steps, he was always eager to see what color the new offspring would be. The market was good this year for natural red wool and he hoped that he and George had finally landed on a good pairing. He called out to Mildred, who bleated back, and proceeded down the row of pens until he reached the one with mama and her babies. WOW! He reached in his pocket and quickly dialed Duddy’s number. 4
“George we done it my man! These lambs are the color of strawberries! The girls will be falling all over themselves.” He paused to listen to the hootin’ on the other end of the phone and then answered a few questions about the overall well being of mama and her babies. “Yep, sure enough George, see you over at the Fun Farm about nine, I have Pete over there doing rounds this morning. I think it is going to be a very good year!”5

Then I recommend you ignore the man behind the curtain and click your heels together three times - cuz Toto you ain't in Kansas anymore!
-
A fun read, now if my three eyes can ever get focused I will try to find some colourful horses to contrast your sheep. Never want a horse of the same colour.
John -
Susan, even if you didnt mean that Gertrude was really Jay, Id like to think so,its funny how so many entries in this contest are picking on Jay! Hes a good sport though, he cries purple tears but as long as he doesnt turn purple (or into a goat.. for that matter) everthing will be okay!
Malzy -
Susan! How dare you write about my home! Oh? What's that? Oh it's the fun farm! I thought you said the funny farm! HAHAHAHA! Okay that wasn't funny, but this story was!
Great job and good luck!
Hugs
Jess -
I apologize for not giving this the proper read but I'm rather ill tonight. Flu seems to have nabbed me.
What do you think about designer animals. I bet there would be a big market for them out there with the trendy set.
Gotta go, head is pounding and my eyes are watering.

This is a really colorful story!!! LOL... I like all the colors!!! This has very good imagery!!! I can just picture all the colored animals!! LOL
Good luck in the contest!!!

Wow! What crazy cool imagery! I caught a common gray squirrel that had somehow gotten itself into my cellar and couldn't get out. I caught it with a fishing net and took it outside. As it scampered away, I suddenly had a vision and cursed for not having thought of it earlier. I had four buckets of dye inthe basement left over from a kids tie-dye party and I cursed that I hadn't thought of turning the squirrel purple or pink while I still had it in my net... Would have been so cool to see that in a tree.

I grew up 25 miles from Trojan Nuclear Power Plant and down river about 200 miles from Hanford! I know what it is too be close by, fortunately we never had a melt down!

You said so yourself I am Gertrude and I shall bawl my eyes out SOLELY FOR THE ATTENTION!
I live near a bad bad nuclear place.

I'm with Mary- colorful tale (tail?) indeed! Shoot you had me believing in weird colored animals. Oh yes! It could happen... [giggles]
-
This is a delightful story! Fun characters, in a bright array. I enjoyed reading this colorful tale!
-
This was a great story to start my day. I certainly would love to have one of those sheep...would make a killing in the market, I'm sure.
Great, Susan!!

What would we do without you to catch our little blunders..
Let this be a lesson to me - never post something with severe sleep deprivation! -
what a fun story, Susan
This is really well written and kinda thought provoking regarding the color mutation cause by the nuclear fallout.. I guess nothings ALL bad after all.
Thanks for entering the contest.... and for helping me decide to go ahead and post it... I had been debating

This reminds me of something Yem would write! Hey I like the idea of pumkin orange, (my favorite color) can I put in an order for next year?
-
Susan, this is very good! I love the speculation about the possible mutations, and the pairing of orange + cranberry = strawberry is fun. You worked the sidestory of the purple squirrelz well. One homonym the spellchecker missed: "Bob could here the sound". Good work!
