Hide and Shriek

It's just another crisp autumn night, in my town where the houses are open like dollhouses. I'm playing hide and seek with friends in one of the dollhouses. It's innocent, it's familiar, it's perfect. I choose a spot under the white two-seater couch in the living room. I giggle with childhood fun. 1

But suddenly the mood changes. No one is in sight, and suddenly the game is real. Hide and Seek, becomes Hide or Die. Worry strikes me as I come to this realization and I mutely verify that all my limbs are hidden. Out of sight, out of danger. He walks, and stands at the head of the street. The familiar werewolf that has tormented us for centuries. I clasp my hand over my mouth and muffle my sobs. I feel that today, I die. He howls nightmarishly and forces his way into our house, ripping everything to shreds. Maybe I should have hid upstairs? He leaves claw marks in everything he passes, and I feel tears run down my face uncontrollably. He enters the living room. 2

I close my eyes tightly. I know this won't save my life, but I can only hope that if I can't see him, he can't see me. I hear his snuffling drawing closer...closer. Suddenly I feel the cold night air on my back. It's anything but comforting. I open my eyes and confirm: the couch has been thrown off me. I am exposed. Terrified I try to run. I spot my friends watching me from under their hiding spots. 3

"Help me! Save me!" I scream to them mentally. I wouldn't give away their spots for anything. Even my life. But they just continue starring, sympathetically. I lead him to the backyard where I lose my footing. A fatal move. I clamber backwards only to find myself against a tree. I feel the crunch of the leaves under me. My final thoughts are of the pain of my flesh tearing. 4

Ready or not, here he comes.

Author notes

Scariest nightmare I've ever had. I needed to sleep with the lights on for about a week after that and I couldn't look at doll houses. Have you ever been in a life or death situation? Felt the despair of knowing your dead? I had but a mere ersatz one, and it changed my life.
