Sons of Shadows: Chapter 1: The Interview

"We went to the courthouse in search of justice and thats what we found...just us." Quote from Professor Eater (William Carlson, Benjamin Wallace, and Erik Blackman's Criminal Justice 101 professor). 1

The journalist walks into the room and sits down across from me. Hes jumpy. Fidgeting with everything, obviously nervous. Why shouldn't he be. He has an interview with an actual member from the Sons of Shadows, and not just any son, but an original member, one of the founders. The journalist must assume I've killed my share of people and knows that I probably have a sense of invincibility and wouldn't hesitate to murder a snitch, let alone an uppity writer. Also, he knows that this paper he plans on writing will document the history of the Sons of Shadows, if he messes it up his career goes down the drain, and possibly his life along with it. 5

 6

He takes out the recorder, pushes the button and says, "This is journalist Robert Hennings interviewing William Carlson, one of the founders of the Sons of Shadows vigilante gang." He puts his hand to the mic and asks, "Ready?"7

 8

I cough to clear my throat, "Are you?"9

 10

Robert chuckles uneasily and says, "Lets begin." He uncovers the mic, puts his big-boy voice and asks his first question, "William, can I call you Will?"11

 12

"Everybody does."13

 14

"Will," he believes by calling me Will the interview will feel more friendly to the public, "allegedly, you and your friends are the founders of the Sons of Silence vigilante gang. Is this true?"15

 16

"It is." Before accepting this interview I went around asking every guy that has ever been involved in the gang if they're OK with me putting their names and actions in this interview. Surprisingly, they all say yes. They all want their five-minutes of fame, along with physical evidence that they were involved in the gang. However, some actions were not approved. Not surprising. We've done some pretty morally disputable things that even I don't want made public. 17

 18

"Really," Robert muses, "and why after all this time have you decided to accept an interview?"19

 20

"I want the history of our lives to be known. I want the motive behind our brand of justice to be out in the open. The world needs to know that we exist." The world needs to be on our side. I think the last statement in my head, but I don't say it.21

 22

"Fair enough. Alright, how did the Sons of Shadows begin?"23

 24

"It began as just a few college friends who liked to party."25

 26

"Can you go into some detail here Will?"27

There are four types of people in this world; the cop, the bad-guy, the victim, and the lawyer.31

 32

In todays society the world goes like this. The bad-guy commits a crime against the defenseless victim. Half the time the cop gets called to come get the bad-guy. Only half the time does the cop actually catch the bad-guy. Then only twenty percent of the time does the bad guy actually go to jail because the lawyer gets him off eighty percent of the time. Then the world goes round and it happens again. 33

 34

An ideal society would go like this. The bad-guy tries to commit a crime against a defenseless victim, but the night before the victim bought a gun, and now the not-so-defenseless victim shoots the bad-guy dead when he tries to commit evil. The cops and lawyers never had to even get involved.35

 38

"Sure I'll tell you in detail. But I must warn you, I will ommit some events in order to protect some livelyhoods."39

 40

"Fine with me."41

 42

"Alright. The gang started, like I said, as four friends who liked to party; Michael, Ben, Erik, and me. We didn't know that our reckless partying would lead us to our life of constant violence and death. Back then though, we didn't care about anything except us, our families, and our friends. Everyone else could get screwed..."43
