They tell you...

1

They tell you that everything's going to be alright, just before shoving you through that formidable door the first day of kindergarten.2

3

They tell you that everything's going to be spectacular, just before dropping you off at the front doors of that big middle school. 4

5

They tell you that everything's going to be fine as long as you don't get knocked up, just before kicking you onto the curb of your new highschool. 6

7

But, that's what they tell you.8

9

How can you ever be sure if what they were telling you was true?10

11

They told you that nothing will ever change.12

13

But things did.14

15

The seasons change, the weather changes, the day changes, people change.16

17

But they never told us that.18

19

Those friends that we thought would last forever drifted away after one of those never-ending summers.20

21

Those days we thought should last a lifetime always disintigrated with the sunset.22

23

Now, another summer has past, another day has gone by and the only thing that's written in stone, is that something is different.24

25

Today, there's a new school, new classes, new teachers, new homework, new hangouts, new cliques.  The quiet girl in eighth grade suddenly had a makeover and screams at the top of her lungs to a song that blasts out of her fifty dollar headphones. The nice guy we knew in church now has lip rings and nose rings, and piercings of all kinds, make-up coating his face like dust on an old clock, and cusses like it's the carbon dioxide he releases.  Those people we've been in classes for two years with have new friends, new ideas, and new perspectives.26

27

We've drifted away from each other in one summer.28

29

The people you used to laugh with, the people you shared your secrets with... They all seem to be a new sort of kid now. They've changed. For the better or the worse, it doesn't really matter anymore, does it? They're strangers now. They call for new introductions and first impressions. 30

31

What a hassle.32

33

Now it's a new school year.34

35

New friends, new teachers, new grades, new worries, new doubts.36

37

Everything is absolutely new.38

39

But there's the same people, the same faces, the same feelings.40

41

However, someone's added something to the usual rut. There's drama and intrigue and mystery, false hopes and loves, jealousy and mayhem, chaos and disorder.42

43

Same old, same old. 44

45

And I do believe, we're all getting sick of it.46

47

But... that's what I tell you.48

49

What do you think 50

And thanks for your entry into the new members contest.

I think that you have done an excellent job of vividly painting the things that make a new year wonderful and dreadful all at the same time. It is sort of a love hate relationship that carries on to some extent after school except that after graduation it becomes a different set of faces.

Nicely done. Best of luck in the contest.

A very interesting and enjoyable read for sure I couldn't agree more at the changes we go through in life, and the transitions. Well done and good luck

    Hello, smileetrouble.

I really enjoyed this piece, and how you left it open in the end with 'What do you think'. We are always going through changes. It's what makes us human, really, and causes us to adapt. It's almost as if we're going through constant eras in just one lifetime...but each phase is remarkable.

    Well done with this!

    All the best.

Interesting why of looking at school. It's been so long since I've gone. But I work in a school and I agree. People change.

Good luck in the contest and thanks for entering.

It is amazing how much things can change from year to year - and how quickly. When I started high school, I never would have been able to guess which people I still talk to today and which would have gone their own way. This is an interesing musing on the subject. Sounds like you're in a bit of a nastalgic mood, almost. Thanks for sharing, and best of luck with all of your writing projects! Welcome to Storywrite!

Hello smileetrouble, welcome to StoryWrite and thank you for sharing this different approach to the opening of a school year with us .

Your narrative was well written and almost poetic.

I like the way you showed the desperate tries of the parents, at each stage of the youngster’s development, to get them to enter those terrifying doors .

You made good use of the prompt .

Best of luck in the contest.

    Geri (Greeter).

I don't hate: I love. This is awesome — though, your age is a little rediculous . Anyway, very good, love your description and emotion. Keep up the great work!
