Chapter 22

Selphia moaned and rolled over. As she did, a bright light hit her eye-lids, causing her to groan again. She sat up and rubbed her eyes, opening them wearily. She glanced around her. She was in her living room, on a couch facing an un-lit fireplace. The room was small; comfortable in size for a family of two. The curtains were drawn, letting in the warm afternoon sun. 4

‘Afternoon?’ she thought, ‘Why am I sleeping in the afternoon?’ 5

She couldn’t remember what had led her to fall asleep like this on a Sunday – she was sure she had planned to work in the garden that morning...6

‘Wait! The garden!’ Selphia remembered she had gone out and bought a new plant for her up-and-coming vegetable patch. But then.... ‘Wings...’ She thought. ‘The boy with wings!’ 7

She shook her head widely, shoulder-length scarlet bangs flying around her face. ‘A dream. That was defiantly just a dream...’ 8

It was only then that she noticed the other presence in the room. She turned her gaze to the lone arm-chair next to the fire. 9

Occupying it was a boy – at least Selphia’s age – with inky black hair tied in a low pony-tail. He sat with one leg crossed over the other, slightly slumped. One hand was in his lap, holding a package of papers; the other was propped of the arm of the chair, his cheek casually resting against his fist. The boy’s eyelids were lowered, as if in boredom, as he read the sheets in front of him. 10

“Selphia Whyte. Age: 15. Gender: Female,” The boy snorted there, “I should hope so.” 11

“You’re the boy with the wings!” Selphia finally managed to splutter, pointing at the intruder with wide eyes. “Except...” She lowered her hand; “You don’t have wings....” 12

Elliot looked up from the profile with a small smile, his orange-tinted glasses glinting in the light, “They’re retractable. So, you’re finally up. I was getting bored. You know, no one warned me that you would faint.” 13

Selphia almost fainted again. 14

“S-so...it wasn’t a dream...?” 15

“No. You really did faint.”16

“That’s not the part I thought was a dream.” Selphia snapped. “Who are you? No, WHAT are you? Why are you in my house?”17

“Well...I really couldn’t just leave you outside, now could I?” 18

Selphia’s eyes narrowed. “Just answer the questions!” 19

Elliot blinked. “Quite a temper. I should add that to the profile...” he sat up straighter and cleared his throat. “Ok. My name is Elliot – Just Elliot. No last name. Most of us don’t have last names. Anyway, I suppose I’m allowed to tell you about us...” He trailed off, almost whispering to himself, “It would be difficult to complete the mission if I don’t...now that my charge already knows about my wings...geez, trust me to mess up not even five minutes into the mission....”20

Selphia watched the muttering boy through still narrowed emerald eyes. She picked up a slight hint of an English accent as he spoke. ‘Mission? Charge? What’s this guy on about? What’s going on?’ 21

Elliot coughed again, “Um...where was I? Oh, yes – I’m an angel. Well, I’m part angel. I was trained as an angel...and my job is as an angel – I guess that would defiantly make me an angel. But there are higher-ups that reckon I’m not angel enough...So I’m not sure if I should call myself an angel, when I’m not technically fully angel and-”22

“You’re babbling.” Selphia deadpanned. Elliot blinked, blushing red in embarrassment. 23

“Ah. Yes, I am. Sorry, this is my first mission...I’m a bit nervous.” 24

Selphia shrugged, “At least you’re honest about your feelings, unlike most of the male population on Earth. They all reckon they’re too manly to get nervous.”25

“Ah.” Was all Elliot said. ‘Oh, geez. Am I not acting like a normal human!?’ He felt himself panicking slightly. Selphia caught onto his line of thought. “Don’t worry – it’s not that weird!” 26

The girl continued, “Anyway. What was all that you were saying about a mission?”27

“Oh, yes.” Elliot regained his composure. “I’m your new Guardian Angel.” 28

The room filled with silence as Selphia stared at Elliot in disbelief. 29

“Ah...” Elliot started awkwardly, “Your old Guard...well, she had a mental breakdown and had to resign. To put it bluntly, you were a bit too much for her.”30

“Guardian angel....? What like a fairy godmother?” Selphia asked, tilting her head to one side.31

The angel raised an eyebrow. “What? No. This isn’t a fairytale – and I’m no one’s fairy anything.” 32

“So...You’ve been sent to-”33

“Guard you. Kind of like a bodyguard – but don’t expect me to take a bullet for you. That’s not how we work. Guardian angels are charged to humans that are special, or have really bad luck. You, have really, really, bad luck. In case you haven’t noticed. This isn’t caused just by your clumsiness – though, looking at your records, I’d say that factor plays a big part in it.
“You must have noticed. You’d be walking down the street and suddenly trip on nothing – causing you to almost be run down by a guy on a bicycle.” 34

Selphia blushed, “Ah...That did happen, once.”35

“I know. Anyway, haven’t you ever wondered what caused that? Well, it was a Soul Snatcher. Annoying little guys. They are invisible to the human eye, and take advantage of the fact, causing accidents for innocent humans. They then snatch up their souls before the Angels can get there. The stolen souls usually become wandering spirits – which causes more problems for humans and angels alike. With me so far?”36

Selphia nodded, fascinated by the new knowledge. Elliot shuffled through his papers and produced a picture of a small green/grey gremlin-like creature. It had small, beady eyes and a large creepy grin. 37

“This is a soul snatcher. They’re about 30 centimetres in height, and they thrive on mayhem.” 38

“Um...yuck?” The girl wrinkled her nose and pushed the picture away. “So, what do these things have to do with me?” 39

‘Wow. If I hadn’t seen this guys’ wings – I so would have called the police by know. I can’t seriously believe him...’ 40

“Like I said,” he continued, “You have really bad luck, and these creatures love to cause trouble. Put half and half together – you get a whole.”41

“You mean...these things are giving me bad luck? Like a black cat or something?” 42

“....This has nothing to do with cats. The soul snatchers are attracted to your natural clumsiness.” Elliot started to explain. Selphia’s face blushed so red that it matched her hair. 43

“They have been causing you trouble all your life.” he said, leaning back in the arm-chair. “Mina couldn’t take it anymore and quit – I believe she’s a surveillance Angel now – and I was sent to replace her.”44

“What makes you think you’ll last any longer than...um...Mina?” Selphia asked. 45

“I have some experience in dealing with trouble-magnets.” Elliot smiled. 46

----47

Meanwhile, up in the Angel training academy in Olympus, a small white-haired boy sneezed.48

The boy’s teacher walked past, patting him on the back, “Someone’s talking ‘bout ‘ya, Wolfie.” 49

“Don’t call me that!!!”50

----51

“Well, anyway. Thanks for the concern, and all, but I don’t need a guardian angel.” Selphia said, standing up and walking towards the door that led to the kitchen. 52

“Sure you do,” Elliot said, following the girl out of the room. “If you didn’t have one – you’d be dead right now!” 53

That made Selphia stop, hand resting on the half closed door that she was about to slam in the boy’s face.54

“What?”55

“Mina was there to fend off the soul snatchers from the day of your birth. If not for her, you would have died 10 times over by now.” 56

“You’re lying.” Selphia said, “There hasn’t been an angel following me my entire life. I would have seen her like I saw you.” 57

“You can only see me,” Elliot frowned softly, “Because I’m letting you see me. It’s part of my mission. I’m here undercover as a human. Normally, Guards won’t do that – but I have to be near you every second of every day, until we stop the soul snatchers.
“A guardian angel can’t just sit in with you in class at school, even if they are invisible. There’s too much of a chance that a seer will be there.” He explained. “Lots of people can actually see angels when they’re young. They lose the sight as they grow up, and stop believing. So, because of your age, Mina wouldn’t have been able to be with you all the time. That’s why so many of your ‘accidents’ happened while you were in school.”58

“How come I could never see angels then?” Selphia asked, continuing to the kitchen, and allowing Elliot entry. He leaned against the kitchen counter, watching as she began preparations for dinner. 59

“Well, you just never had the sight, I guess. So, what are you making?” He said conversationally. 60

“Chicken stir-fry. You want some?” The redhead replied. 61

“No thanks. I’m a vegetarian.” 62

“I somehow get the feeling that I should have guessed that.” Selphia frowned. 63

Elliot chuckled. “Angels are mostly vegetarians. Though meat is very tempting for me. But, they don’t serve it up there.”64

“Ah.” Selphia replied, before falling silent and concentrating on the task at hand. 65

“So, you’ve accepted it? Just like that?” Elliot asked after five minutes of silence. 66

“Yup.” The girl replied as she peeled a carrot. “Wanna help out?” 67

He looked over at the bowl of vegetables that had to be sliced. “No, I’m fine.”68

Selphia huffed. 69

“Hey, I’m an angel, not a personal assistant.” 70

At that moment, they heard a car pulled up in the drive-way. The two froze. 71

“I guess that’s your mother back from work?” Elliot asked. Selphia nodded,72

“We have to get you out of here!”73

The front door clicked open, “Hey, Selph! I’m home~!” Sung the voice of a middle aged woman. 74

“Don’t worry,” Elliot whispered, “I’m as good as gone.” And he slowly faded from sight. 75

The kitchen door opened and a smiling redhead appeared, dressed in business attire, and carrying a briefcase. 76

“Mum, hi!” Selphia smiled at the lady, slightly shaken by Elliot’s fading act. She supposed it would take her awhile to get used to the thought of angel’s being more than mere myth. 77

“Are you alright, Selph? You look a little pale.” Her mother asked in concern, placing her briefcase down, and walking over to her daughter – on the way catching sight of the smashed pot plant on the patio from the window. “Dear, what happened?”78

“Oh, umm...I’m fine, really.” Selphia glanced at the plant, “There....there was a really big spider. That’s all.” 79

“A spider? Really?” Whispered a voice beside her ear. Selphia jumped in fright, heart pounding. She heard Elliot chuckle as he moved away. Her mother was even more concerned now, “Are you sure you’re feeling alright?”80

Selphia forced a smile, “I’m Ok, really.”81

“Hmm...Ok, I believe you.” Her mother said, before sniffing the air, “Yum, dinner smells delicious!” 82

“It’ll be ready in five!” Selphia told her mother, “Go get cleaned up!” 83

Selphia’s mother laughed as she was shooed from the room, and ascended the stairs to her bedroom. 84

“So, that’s Miss Whyte, then. She seems nice.” Elliot said, shimmering back into sight beside Selphia. 85

“What do you think you were doing!? Don’t sneak up on me like that! What if she’d heard you!?”86

Elliot took a step back, arms up in defence. “Hey, chill out. I was just having some fun.”87

“Well don’t!”88

“Selph? Who are you talking too?” Her mother called from the stairs. 89

“No one mum!” Selphia called up to her. She then turned back to Elliot, “You. Go, Now.” She said, pushing him passed the dining table, and out the back door. 90

“Hey, hey, hey! Not cool!” he whined as she slammed the screen door. 91

“Now, you shouldn’t be able to come back in without my permission, right?” 92

Elliot snorted, “That may work with vampires, or fairies – but not with angels.” 93

“Argh!” Selphia stamped her foot once and moved away, back to the kitchen. 94

Elliot sat on the paved ground outside –back in the garden he had arrived in -, leaning against the wall of the house. He leaned his head back, listening to the soft conversation of Selphia and her mother. He closed his eyes and drifted into a light sleep. 95
