The People I'd Die For (part 6)

As Amy and Brian heard Kat screaming, they ran to the front of the school to see Jake lying limp on the road. Amy stopped running and stood still. "Oh my god..." she said weakly.1

"I'll call for help." Brian said as he took out his cell phone. While Brian was calling 911, Kat ran over to Jake. 2

"Jake..." Kat said through her tears. She knelt on the ground and held Jake in her arms. Jake's blood was pouring from his head and onto Kat's hands and dress. "Come on, don't leave me here." she said. Jake was not responding. Kat was unaware of the crowd gathering near the door and neither was Amy. Amy was on her knees, her hands covering her eyes, shaking and crying.3

When the ambulance came after what like seemed forever to Kat, the paramedics put Jake on a stretcher and loaded him into the ambulance. "One person can ride in the ambulance." the driver said quickly. Brian nodded to Kat as if to say "You go.". As quickly as she could, Kat climbed into the ambulance. The paramedics got in, closed the doors, and sped off.4

Kat was sitting next to Jake, stroking his bloody hair. "It'll be okay." Kat said. "You're going to be fine.". Kat had to move when the paramedics told hert to. She cringed when she heard the words "severe trauma in the head and chest". They finally got to the hospital and Kat watched the paramedics and the ER doctors wheel Jake into a room. Kat ran to follow him but another doctor stopped her. "I'm sorry miss," he said, "but you're going to have to wait in the waiting room." Kat took another glace at Jake and then reluctantly sat down in the waiting room.5

Back at school, Amy had her head in her hands and was silently crying. Brian was trying hard not to cry himself. He pulled Amy into a quick hug and held her for a minute. He pulled away and grabbed Amy's shoulders. "Can you make it to my car?" Brian asked as he looked into her eyes. Amy nodded and wiped her eyes. "We have to hurry." Brian said as he put his arm around her and started walking to his car.6

"I'm so scared." Amy said, completely forgetting that she was in a fight with Brian. 7

"Me too." Brian said as he looked at the ground. He opened the passenger door and let Amy get in. He closed the door after her and got in the drivers seat. He started the car. backed out of the parking spot, and headed towards the hospital. 8

During the ride to the hospital, Amy put her knees ip her her chest and started to cry silently. "It's okay." Brian said as he took one hand of the steeering wheel and put it on Amy's shoulder. 9

Amy looked over at Brian and said "No, it's not. What if he's gone by the time we get there?"10

"He won't be." Brian said in a comforting tone. Not only was he trying to convince Amy, he was trying to convice himself.11

When Amy and Brian arrived at the hospital, they found Kat in the small waiting room. Amy ran up to Kat and hugged her. Brian hugged Kat to and said "How are you?" in a gentle voice.12

"I really don't know." Kat answered, looking down at her feet and crossing her arms. "It all happened so fast...".13

"I know." Brian said. "I know."14

"We should know how he is fairly soon." Kat said looking up at Brian and Amy. Her arms still crossed, she went over to a chair and sat down. 15

As the time passed slowly by, Kat paced around the room. She would be sitting quietly in her chair one minute and walking quickly around the room the next. Amy however stayed very still in her chair and hardly moved. Brian stood in the archway and repeatedly tried to look into Jake's ER room.16

The doctor eventually came out of the ER room and swung his stethiscope over his neck. "Call it." he called back into the room. He nodded towards Kat, Brian, and Amy. "Are you family of Jacob Riley?" the doctor asked.17

Kat jumped out of her seat and came forward. "We're his friends and I'm his girlfriend. His family is out of town."18

"Do you have their phone numbers?" the doctor asked.19

"Yes, now just tell us what happened!" Kat shouted. 20

"I suggest all of you sit down." the doctor said, motioning to the chairs. 21

"We're fine." Kat said quickly. "Now what happened to Jake?"22

The doctor sighed and started talking. "There was severe hemorrhage in the brain and his lungs collapsed. I'm sorry, there was nothing we could do."23

A sharp intake of breath came from Amy. Brian pulled Amy into a hug and held her. Amy sobbed and Brian too was crying as he stroked Amy's hair. Kat however did not move and stood silently. "I'm sorry for your loss." the doctor said, then calmly walked away. 24

"Jake..." Kat said quietly as she looked into the ER room where the nurses were placing Jake's body into a body bag. She started to walk quickly to the room then burst into a run. She pushed the nurses away and unzipped the bag. 25

"Kat!" Brian called out to her, still holding Amy. She wasn't listening. The nurses tried to pull her away but she shoved them back. 26

"Come on baby, wake up." she said to Jake's body as she stroked his cold face. She started sobbing uncontrolably. As the nurses called for security, Kat put her index finger on Jake's lips. "Talk to me, sweetie.". A security guard came and removed Kat from the room with force. As he sat Kat down in a chair in front of Brian and Amy, Kat heard two doctors talking. 27

"I just had to patch up some drunken idiot." one of the doctors said. "Her name was Julia Schier. She was drivin' and crashed into a telephone pole.". Kat put her head in her hands. Her mother had gotten into another car crash. As Kat was just about to go up to the doctors and see if she was okay, the doctor continued talking. "Too bad she had already ran over that Jake Riley kid before she crashed."28

Apparently Amy and Brian had been listening too. They both stared at the doctors, wide eyed. Kat was again speechless. She stared off at the white tile floor and was silent in shock.29

Author notes

In case you didn't understand, Julia Schier is Kat's alcoholic mother as mentioned in part...well it's mentioned in an earlier part in the story. Comments would be GREATLY appreciated and thanks to all who read this.

Holy crap...that's...a shock...I can't even begin to imagine what Kat's going to do when she gets home...you just keep rolling out the punches don't you! I can't believe how heartless and rude that doctor was...and the way you described the scene with the body bag...I could see it happening...I was sitting here and wiping the tears off my cheeks and cursing Kat's mom while watching Brian and Amy's relationship beginning to repair...Kat will never be the same...it's...you are really good at rolling out the punches here.

Wow Wilted ... this was amazing and that certainly was a twist which i didnt envisage coming - dying (sorry for the pun) to see how kat deals with this one ..... horrible horrible situation to even imagine, and the fact that her friends heard them saying it too....

Just one comment: the doctors *probably* wouldnt tell the kids about him dying until they had rung his parents, howevr it would work well if u had kat ring his folks as soon as she got to the hospital, or a 'nurse went to ring his parents' or somehing like that

Excellent - waiting for the next part!!
