Striker woke up in his den. He sighed and stood up, he shook himself. Striker padded over to the den entrance and sat down. He looked out the sun was just starting to rise, making the trees have an orangey glow. Another wolf walked over, the she-wolf was what with brown markings on her face, back and tail. “Good morning Striker.” The she wolf said softly. Striker glanced over at her. “Morning Cinder.”3

Cinder was Strikers den mate, from when they were pups. Though they came from different mothers and fathers, they were very close. Cinder though, thought of Striker as more than just a friend. She liked him very much. “Cinder,” Striker said looking down. “Can you cover for me?” he asked looking up at her. Cinder smiled. “Sure. Where are you going?” she asked. “I‘m just heading out to talk to someone, just tell everyone else I‘m off hunting.” Cinder’s smile faded. “Ok.” she said with no emotion in her voice. Striker knew she was concerned, but he wanted to talk to Coal, something in his heart told him that she felt the same way. Striker nodded to Cinder and set off. He crossed into the StarFire clan boundary diagonally, he walked into the river and rolled in the mud to hide his sent. He came to a large oak tree and sitting underneath it was Coal.4

Striker’s heart skipped a beat as he saw her sitting there, her eyes closed. The wind blew slightly and her dark fur rippled in the breeze. Striker stepped out of the brush and stood in front of her. She jumped up and growled at him. “Who are you?” she snarled. “Coal, its me Striker, remember?” he said keeping his head low. Coal stood up straight. “Striker?” she paused. “What are you doing here?” she asked him, confused. “I wanted to see you again.” he said embarrassed. Coal looked down. “Oh.” she blushed. Then she looked up and smiled at him. Striker looked up and met her amber eyes. He held his breath and took another step forward, Coal did the same. They were about a foot apart now. “Coal, I-” Coal cut him short. “I know, I can see it in your eyes.” she smiled at him. “I don’t care if this is forbidden. I want to see you a-and get to know you more.” he looked back at the ground. Coal smiled.5

Something about him made her feel warm inside, from the moment they both met, they felt as if they grew up together, like they were life long friends, even though they’d just met. Striker and Coal talked for a while, till the sun was high in the sky. Striker looked up seeing the position of the sun. “I have to get back.” he said to her. She walked over to him and pressed her nose to his. “Goodbye.” she said sweetly to him. Striker smiled and turned away. Coal watched him go until his fur disappeared in the bracken. She sighed and turned around to walk back to the main den where Stone and Aurora slept. She walked for only a few moments when Stone emerged from behind a bush. His fur was bristling and his teeth showed. He growled at her. “What were you doing with him?” he snarled. Coal’s tail dropped and her ears laid flat on her head. “I… we were just talking.” she said nervously. “That was more than a talk.” Stone growled. Stone lunged at her biting into her neck. She gasped, Stone bit down into her neck but not hard or deep enough to kill her. 6

Striker heard Stone yelling and rushed back to find him on Coal. He ran over and pulled Stone off of her. He then rushed to Coal and helped her up. “Coal, are you alright?” he asked inspecting her neck. Stone stood up and growled. “Get off of my territory!” Stone yelled. “Both of you!” Striker growled, and Coal sunk down. How could her brother kick her out of the pack like this? She looked at Stone, his eyes were blazing. Striker growled at him. “Lets get out of here.” he said to Coal. Striker turned and headed back to his pack boundaries Coal followed behind him, her tail dragging.
