We walked to the cafeteria in silence. Adam was a step in front of me. I felt strange walking right beside him, so I stayed back. My vision and Cass’s words were running through my head.
The bell rang as soon as we walked into the cafeteria. Adam grabbed two trays and gave one to me. I followed him to the line. He ordered two chicken roll and a Coke. I ordered a chicken sandwich, an apple and orange juice. We paid for our food and sat down at one of the tables at the back.
The cafeteria was getting filled with people by then. Soon after, a few people joined us. I recognized their faces. They were in our class. I learned their names. Angela sat in front of me, with the boyfriend Eric. Eric's older twin brother, Nigel sat to my right with his girlfriend Siobhan beside him. After the short introduction, everything at out table went quiet again.
I looked around. All the ‘popular kids sat together in the few tables at the middle of the room. Around them were the skaters, the geeks, and the drama club. I saw a few Goths and scene kids around too. A bunch of younger kids sat around at the top. Our table, well, none of us fit into the same group. Angela, Eric and Siobhan were very smart. Nigel was popular. Adam had the ‘not bothered look on his face. Me, well I was an alien…
The only reason the four were sitting at this table was because they wanted to sit together even though they were different.
The slightly broken conversation flowed between them.
‘…I wonder what's for dinner…’
‘… same as yesterday…’
‘… and she told me…’
‘…so now I'm in top 10...’
While sipping my orange juice, I listened to the pieces of their conversation.
Adam tapped me on my bare shoulder making me jump.
‘Sorry,’ he chuckled, ‘want to get out of this stuffy place?’
‘Yeah,’ I nodded.
‘Bye guys,’ I said before getting up.
‘See you,’ Angela said, while Siobhan smiled, and Eric and Nigel waved.
