Maria held her brother tightly in her arms as she walked through the train. She was not taking any risks of losing someone else so close to her. The devastation on the train was so unbearable. Maria couldn't stand looking at all the people who looked like they had just seen someone die. But then some probably had. Nobody really looked up at her as she walked. Nobody really cared anymore. 1
Maria slowly made her way back to her seat. She didn't want to go back but knew she couldn't keep walking up and down the train car. Sleep would never come easily to her, she knew that. Her mind was too full of worry and fear that they would be caught, and she had no clue what would happen if they were. Maria carefully sat down in her seat again, not wanting to wake either Andras or Katherine. But to her surprise, Katherine was already awake. Maria smiled at her in greeting.2
"How was your sleep?" Maria asked.3
"Fine....I guess," Katherine replied looking rather groggy. "You haven't sleep yet have you?"4
"No, but I don't think I could. I'd be much too worried about Andras to sleep," Maria replied.5
"Well I could watch him so you can get some sleep. You are going to need it," suggested Katherine. Maria thought about it for a minute then handed Andras over. She heard Katherine whisper good night before she fell asleep.6
~"Run!" Maria heard someone yell. She got up to run but couldn't find Andras. She looked around frantically. He was nowhere in sight. Maria ran up and down the train screaming his name. There were Nazi soldiers chasing everyone with guns. She saw a bundle in one of their arms but didn't think anything of it. She got closer and realized it wasn't just a bundle. It was Andras! Maria began screaming frantically. The soldier walked up to her a began shaking her.....~7
"Maria! Maria wake up!" Katherine was shaking her awake. "You were dreaming and yelling for Andras."8
"Oh....I didn't realize it. Sorry," Maria answered still half asleep. At that moment Andras began to cry. Katherine handed him back to Maria and she held him.9
"Shh," she cooed at him. "Go back to sleep, baby. It's all okay now." Andras settled down after a while and fell back into a deep slumber. Maria looked outside and saw it was starting to become light out. She could see farm houses and fields covered in burnt crops. She knew they were getting closer to Denmark with every passing minute. She also knew that Denmark meant freedom for her, her brother and Katherine. But yet the minutes couldn't go by fast enough.10
