Jewels of Darkness - 11. Repetere Fabula

“The intuitive mind is a sacred gift and the rational mind is a faithful servant. We have created a society that honours the servant and has forgotten the gift.”1

Darkness set up a fire in Her realm to keep Adam warm; Evelin had already fallen asleep in his arms, but he still held her tightly against him, letting her listen to his beating heart. Love was still not with them, but only Adam seemed to notice, or care. He spoke up, in a hushed voice so Evelin could remain sleeping, to Darkness.3

“You said you would help us. We are currently stuck in a cave. How exactly is that helping us? And am I dreaming all this? I mean, giant cats with wings? Come on, I've not even seen that when stoned.”4

Darkness sat down next to Adam. “She loves you, and trusts you, but she also trusts me. Have a little faith in me, Adam, and I promise to you both that you will stay safe. Light cannot get you here. Have faith in me, just for tonight, Adam, and after that, if you wish it to be so, you can take Evelin wherever you like to keep her safe. Just for tonight, have faith in me. If I do not keep you safe, or if you are at risk at any point, you may leave at sunrise, and we will not ask questions.”5

Adam considered it for a moment. He knew, deep in his beating heart, that Evelin was probably much safer with Darkness and Innocence than him alone. “I’ll do it, but you have just one night. Any mistakes and we’re both out of here.” Evelin stirred in Adam’s arms. He kissed her forehead, whispered to her, and she went back to sleep. “I love her, Darkness, like I've never loved before. If anything happens to her, I’d blame myself, no matter what. I can’t lose her. Keep her safe, not me.”6

Darkness patted Adam’s hand. “My dear, if I let you get hurt, she would be upset. I know you want to keep her happy, I can see it in your eyes, but keeping you safe and alive would keep her happy. Will you please trust me? I know what is best.” Adam nodded hesitantly. “Excellent! Now if you will excuse me, I have some business to do. Do you have any questions before I leave?”7

“Will you be back soon?” He could not keep the hint of fear out of his voice. He wanted to have someone close that Evelin trusted; it would keep him from going insane with fear.8

“Naturally, my dear, I shall be back as soon as I possibly can. In the meantime, Innocence can keep you company. Scratch Her behind the ears; She loves that.” With a smile and a swooping bow, Darkness left.9

Adam motioned silently for Innocence to be near him; he hated being so far away from the only conscious person in the room, even if it was a giant cat with wings. Innocence’s gentle voice echoed a little around the cave, but She had to be careful; Her mouth was just a tiny distance away from Adam’s ear, so She knew that one false move and Adam would be without a right ear, and with a mouthful of abuse from Evelin.10

“She is beautiful in both her mind and body. You are a very lucky man, Adam.” Innocence purred as he stroked Her back. “I take it you like cats?”11

Adam laughed softly. “Yeah, I love cats. I always wanted to have one, but circumstances would never let me. Maybe in the future, if Evelin wants to, we can have one. You never know, we might just adopt you!” He laughed again, feeling more comfortable. He felt conscious of the fact he was talking to a purring cat the same size as him, but the voice was too human, and too gentle, for him to be fully aware of it.12

“I can see it in your eyes, Adam. You want to know why we have the names we do. Am I right?” Innocence looked him straight in the eyes, Her gentle gaze making him glance away as he nodded. “I knew it. I am not that innocent. Not as innocent as people think, at least, since I stand for all that is innocent. Love is not the Cupid that you mortals believe in. She stands for love and all the emotions around it.” Like a saprophyte, but using drama as a fuel for life, and not a dead creature, Innocence paused before resuming. “Darkness is different. Darkness does not represent the glorious dark; She is the glorious dark.”
