“Kill one man, and you are a murderer. Kill millions of men, and you are a conqueror. Kill them all, and you are a god”1
Jean Rostand2
On wings of glass, Light flew down; with Sin on His one hand, and Death on His other, Light did not land with grace like Darkness, but with an awkwardness that was felt by all. Sin leapt off Light’s hand, her catlike grace adding to the amazement, and slight horror, of those in the cave.3
Darkness stood up, but was quickly stopped in her tracks by Sin. With its emerald coloured skin, and blood red wings, Sin defined majestic; He was like a cat in appearance, except for her serpent mouth and teeth. He, trained by Light, could manipulate any living creature into following Him, and committing an act that would hurt many. The more He hurt others, the stronger the need to be in control; He was addicted to the thrill of the chase, the excitement of the manipulation, the enjoyment He felt when the victim carried out His commands.4
With outstretched wings, Darkness was protecting Evelin and Adam from Death. With white wings, and a white body, He seemed innocent. The white wings were made of bone fragments from His unborn victims; the flowing black cloak was made by sewing their souls together.5
Darkness called out to Her two helpers; Love and Innocence swiftly arrived, each on one side of Darkness, blocking Evelin and Adam from harm. Love, like Sin, had a catlike appearance, but instead of being green, Love was a warm red in colour. Her wings were a soft pink in colour, matching perfectly Her eyes. Innocence wore the same style ball gown as Love, but in a pale blue, rather than Love’s pale cerise. Innocence had pure ivory wings, to assist Her when She flew; they done the job perfectly when he needed Her feline body off the ground.6
With their wings folded back, both Love and Innocence defined majestic, yet it was the naive words from Innocence’s voice that broke the undividable silence. “I am not sure if you are aware, Light, but those mortals are in love.”7
Light became furious. “The problems lie with what they are! They are mere mortals! And I, for one, plan to test that same mortality. First,” He began to flutter his glass wings, “I believe a little fear is in order.” He looked from Evelin’s shaking body to Adam, who had begun to fall asleep standing up. His gaze stopped on Adam. “Am I boring you, messenger?”8
“Yeah, as a matter of fact, you are. All this nonsense is stupid. You really think those wings can carry you?” He picked up a hardback copy of War and Peace, and threw it at Light’s left wing. It shattered into a billion tiny pieces. Evelin broke the right wing with a Bible. “Glass breaks easily, you fool. Did your mother teach you nothing?”9
“How dare you call me a fool; it is because of me that you are a writer. I have no parents. I created myself.” Light gloated, until Evelin spoke up; she had gained courage from Adam.10
“That is impossible. No one can create themselves. How can they? They have to be there in the first place. It is common knowledge. It is a classic paradox; what came first to create life had to have been created in order to be created, but then what created the creator? No one is closer to answering it today, as they were when the question was first thought of at the start of life.”11
After being too brave for her own good, Evelin was thrown across the room by a flick of Love’s tail; it was intentional, since Love knew that she was in danger from Light; with Adam holding her, she was safe. Innocence tried to speak, but was unable to; Death touched Her with His cloak. She did not die, as a mortal would, but She was momentarily stunned. Her eyes became unfocused, and She was paralysed. Darkness called Her name repeatedly before She was able to blink a response.12
Darkness, Love, Innocence, Adam and Evelin seemed to vanish. All that remained was Darkness’ growling voice. “Three words for you, Light. This means war.”
