“Here she comes,” Dickey calls in a loud whisper to Jimmy. He ducks behind the corner of a small house. He sticks his head out for one last peek and cups his hands to his face trying to stifle a snicker. 1
Jimmy kneels on the lawn with his baseball cap covering something on the grass. For thirteen, Jimmy is small for his age. Momma always says it’s because he hasn’t had his growth spurt yet, and that soon he will be as tall as his brother, Walt. 2
Jimmy is wearing faded overalls with patches on both knees, and is in dire need of a haircut. He shushes Dickey and motions for him to get out of sight before brushing a lock of brown hair out of his eyes.3
A black lab pup tied to a nearby tree seems curious about what the boys are up to. He cocks his head to one side and wags his tail. 4
The boys’ younger sister, Betty, approaches, her arms folded around her school book, she hugs it to her chest. The sunshine makes her red hair look fiery. She spots Jimmy and cuts across the lawn toward him. “What are you doing?” she asks. 5
“Oh, good! You gotta help me Bet. I’ve got the biggest bullfrog you ever saw under my hat, and if I pull it away, he will get away from me. You got to grab it for me.”6
“I’m not going to grab any old bullfrog for you, Jimmy.”7
“Oh, come on,” he implores. “I want to trade it to Freddy Hanes for a pocket knife- for Dickey’s eleventh birthday.” 8
Her eyes roll around their sockets as she thinks it over, “If you say that the knife is from both of us, I will.” 9
“Sure, sure,” Jimmy nods. “Now listen, this frog is fast, so you gotta be ready to pounce in it as soon as I move my hat, you understand?”10
Betty nods her head and sets her book on the grass as she kneels down. She scrunches her face in a repulsed expression. 11
“Come on, Bet, you got to open your eyes if you’re going to catch this frog.”12
Betty relaxes her face, licking her lips in anticipation. 13
“You can’t hesitate for a second. Not one second.”14
“Okay, okay,” she says impatiently. 15
“On the count of three then. One… two… three!”16
Jimmy lifts the hat, and Betty dives at the bullfrog. 17
“Oh! Oh, ahhhh!” Betty screams looking at her hands in disbelief. They are covered in dog excrement, “Yuck! Oh, you wait until Mom gets home, Jimmy Reams!” she screams. 18
Dickey appears from around the corner of the house. Both boys roll in the grass laughing at their sister. 19
“Boys are disgusting!” she says as she stands, careful not to touch herself with her hands. “Momma’s gonna tan both your hides!” she cries and runs toward the house. 20
Their older sister Mary comes out of the house when she hears Betty’s screams. She gives the boys a cross look as she guides Betty to the water spicket on the side of the house. 21
The boys beat tail and run as soon Mary turns her back to help Betty. They run into a field behind the house where the native grass has grown high enough to conceal them. Still laughing, they flop down on their backs. 22
“That was better than any pocket knife,” Dickey laughs.

little sneaky buggers but good story
that was good, gave me a clear picture in my head of the story, being one of three girls i never had to put up with kid brothers and by your story I'm thankful for that! lol -
Very funny!
I just had this feeling that the boys were playing a trick on their sister. I really enjoyed this story. It kept my attention throughout, and I look forward to reading more of the biography that you are writing about your grandmother. My great-grandmother raised me, and I never thought about it before, but it would be a really good idea to write a biography about her as well. So, not only did you keep my attention, and wrote a story that I thoroughly enjoyed, you inspired me! Great job, and keep up the good work! -
Very good
Just like a couple of boys with a little sister to torment to death. You have made them very real and interesting, hope you continue.

This is a great story! I very much enjoyed it. Hope you continue with it. Make Betty get even or something.

Good luck and best of luck with its continuation!

It's very sweet, even though some of the images aren't so pleasant, ick. Still a very happy story and a pleasure to read. Your use of diction really added to the story. I hope you continue on with the story!

Haha...that was cute.
Good job! -
I totally enjoyed that. I must admit that I was laughing a bit at the pranksters even though it was a pretty mean joke. This certainly has my interest and has me ready to turn the page to see how much trouble the pair get into.

“Here she comes,” Dickey calls in a loud whisper to Jimmy. He ducks behind the corner of a small house. He sticks his head out -> who does he refer to - Dickey or Jimmy?
A tale from an easier time....and no doubt there is a sequel outlining how she got even.
God job.
