Sc1-3
3 boys enter a room in an unusual building. In the middle of the room is a mysterious object, on the other side there are 3 chairs of different colours near a door, a door that may or may not be locked.4
Brad: 5
Remarkable!6
Gary:7
Astounding!8
Grant:9
What is it?10
Brad:11
I’m not too sure Grant.12
Gary:13
Me either Brad.14
Brad:15
Looks expensive Gary.16
Gary:17
Must be new.18
Grant:19
Top of the line.20
Brad:21
Cut of the edge technology.22
Brad:23
Astounding.24
Grant:25
Remarkable.26
Gary:27
Don’t touch it Brad! Don’t touch it Grant! Who knows how delicate it could be? What if we broke it. We’d be in trouble. Lots of trouble. What kind of first impression would that give? We’d look like bumbling idiots!28
Brad:29
But that’s what we are Gary . . .30
Grant:31
They don’t know that yet Brad!32
Gary:33
Hush you two. Sit down and forget about that thing.34
They all sit in their chairs starring at the mysterious object. It doesn’t take long before Brad gets up and starts examining the mysterious thing again.35
Gary:36
Don’t touch it Brad. I guess there’s no harm in looking.37
Brad:38
Exactly Gary.39
Grant:40
What if we’re not supposed to look at it?41
Brad:42
What if we are Grant? What if we are?43
Gary:44
You think too much. Just sit down and forget about it.45
Brad:46
I wonder what it does! Hey, it has buttons!47
Gary:48
Don’t!! oh no, this can’t be good.49
Grant:50
Now you’ve gone and done it!51
Brad:52
I don’t think it’s broken. It’s making noises. 53
Gary:54
What is it doing?55
Grant:56
I feel sleepy………..57
58
Sc2 - “wakey - wakey!”59
All 3 boys fall asleep and wake up in another room60
All 3:61
Ouch! What happened?62
Manager:63
You touched the thing.64
Assistant:65
You shouldn’t have touched the thing.66
Assistant 2:67
Bad touch!68
Grant:69
We didn’t mean any harm.70
Gary:71
I told them not to touch it. And that they probably shouldn’t look either. But nobody listened to me.72
Assistant:73
We know it wasn’t your fault.74
Assistant2:75
We know it wasn’t you. The boss knows too.76
Manager:77
It was Brad, that we know for sure. We were watching the whole time, my assistants and I.78
Assistant:79
We had our eyes80
Assistant2:81
On you.82
Manager:83
I’m sure you have many questions you would like to have answered.84
Assistant2:85
Many questions86
Assistant:87
Too many to answer.88
Manager:89
But that we will deal with after.90
Assistant2:91
After.92
Assistant:93
After we deal with you!94
95
All 3 strangers point to Brad and the 2 assistants corner him.96
Brad:97
What do you mean deal with me?98
Assistant2:99
It’s funny100
Assistant:101
You should ask! The boss will tell you why.102
Assistant2:103
Why we called all 3 of you, and chose to pick you.104
Manager:105
And now for the other 2...106
Grant:107
What about us?108
Assistant:109
We will take you110
Assistant2:111
Away you will go.112
Manager:113
Nothing bad or horrendous of course114
Assistant:115
Just paperwork.116
Assistant2:117
And photographs and red tape.118
Manager:119
Sticky red tape and preliminaries.120
Assistant:121
Legal of course.122
Assistant2:123
Ask our lawyers if you feel forced.124
Gary:125
Lawyers?126
Grant:127
Red tape? What’s happening here?128
Manager:129
You all answered the call. You came right away.130
Assistant2:131
We’re giving you jobs, and they all come with pay.132
Assistant:133
That’s what you wanted, that’s why you came.134
Manager:135
And as for this one (points to Brad) he gets the interview.136
Assistants one and two, take this Bradley with you.137
Assistants:138
Yes sir, yes we will. 139
140
exeunt both assistants and brad. 141
Both assistants return, but without Brad.142
Sc3 - the returning assistants143
144
Assistant:145
Back!146
Assistant2:147
We have sent him away to the interview room.148
Assistant 1 &2:149
Just like you asked.150
Manager:151
Good. Do you think he’ll fair well?152
Assistant:153
Of course we do.154
Assistant2:155
He thinks like you.156
Grant:157
Like who?158
Assistant2:159
Not like you.160
Gary:161
What’s going on here? Why’d you pick him? What diabolical mechanical things have you planned for him?162
Manager:163
Ah! Ha ha ha ha! Worried are we? I’m sure you feel over-looked and very disappointed, you being the brains out of your 2 other friends.164
Gary:165
What do you mean?166
Manager:167
Well dear Gary, as we observed168
Assistants:169
As we did see170
Manager:171
You warned him not to touch because you didn’t know what horrors it could bring. Which is quite remarkable and such a wise thing.172
Assistants:173
Wise, very wise.174
Manager:175
But not today, sorry to say. Not this time. The one time that it could count.176
Gary:177
I was being cautious. I didn’t know -178
Assistants:179
Exactly you didn’t know! There’s the problem right there!180
Grant:181
He didn’t take a risk!182
Manager:183
Hmm… I over looked you too. Strange how you sway.184
Grant:185
What? How I sway?186
Manager:187
You’re quick to adapt. I like that.188
Assistant:189
Quick190
Assistant2:191
To adapt 192
Manager and both assistants:193
We like that!194
Assistant2:195
Oh yes. 196
Assistant:197
Yes we do!198
Grant:199
Well I always believed in thinking on my feet. And it even applies to when I’m sitting or laying down.200
Manager:201
Oh and funny too!202
Assistants:203
Funny funny very funny! 204
Assistant2:205
Ha 206
Assistant:207
Ha!208
Grant:209
Thank you… I think.210
Assistant:211
Uh oh! 212
Assistant2:213
Did you hear that?214
Assistant:215
I did too.216
Assistant2:217
That won’t do.218
Assistant:219
Not at all.220
Assistant2:221
Not one bit.222
Assistant:223
He’d better adapt right quick224
Assistant2:225
Not left either.226
Manager:227
You think? Well that simply won’t do!228
229
Manager begins to create a courtroom like setting as both assistants become judge and jury.230
Assistants one and two,231
What say you in the matter of the thinking?232
Assistant:233
I say… Let’s not tink about it.234
Assistant2:235
Guilty!236
Assistant:237
Not guilty.238
Assistant2:239
Objection!240
Assistant:241
On what grounds council?242
Assistant2:243
These grounds! (points to the ground they stand on)244
Assistant:245
Over ruled. Council, what say you in the matter of the thinking?246
Manager:247
Guilty!248
Assistant2:249
Not guilty!250
Manager:251
Then it’s decided, we say….252
All 3:253
Guilty as charged!254
Grant: 255
What does that mean?256
Assistant:257
Oh it means dire and grave things258
Assistant2:259
Things we dare not mention260
Assistant:261
For they are so horrid and freaky and unnatural things!262
Manager:263
It means you’re not what we are looking for.264
Assistant2:265
We were getting to that.266
Gary:267
What’s wrong with Grant?268
Assistant:269
What’s wrong with Grant is…270
Assistant2:271
He’s not getting one.272
Assistant:273
No grants for Grant.274
Manager:275
I tink Dear Gary, that’s not what you’re really asking.276
Assistant2:277
Nope, not at all. A cover it is,278
Assistant:279
Covering up the real question. One you thought up all by yourself.280
Assistant2:281
All by yourself you did think.282
Gary:283
What other question?284
Manager:285
You really want to know, what’s wrong with -286
Assistant2:287
You!288
Assistant:289
What about me? What have I done?290
Assistant2:291
Did you lock the door before you left that Brad in the room?292
Assistant:293
I didn’t think about that!294
Assistant2:295
Oh no no! This cannot be good.296
Manager:297
You forgot to lock the door?298
Assistant:299
Shame on me!300
Assistant2:301
For shame!302
Assistant:303
Shameful304
Assistant2:305
Shamefully true!306
Manager:307
Go deal with this now. Now you must deal!308
Assistant:309
Off I go to deal with it. Deal with it I will.310
Manager:311
Occasionally think, that’s all I ask. Take this one with you, It’s all he seems to do is think. (points to Gary)312
Assistant2:313
Now’s your time to shine. Go. Go to it.314
Assistant:315
Get to it!316
Assistants 1 and 2 and Gary exeunt.317
318
Sc4 - the talk319
Manager:320
Grant, my dear boy, what do you think is wrong with you?321
Grant:322
Think too much or think too little?323
Manager:324
Exactly, and the key to working for me is…325
Grant:326
I don’t know, balance?327
Manager:328
Not just the check books.329
Grant:330
So Gary thinks too much, what about brad? He thinks too little?331
Manager:332
No, not at all my dear Grant. Gary gets lost in this whole thinking thing. He’s very cerebral and thinks every thing through, you can tell just by watching him. Brad, well Brad is a rare kind of boy.333
Grant:334
Rare is one way to put it.335
Manager:336
Brad is brave, but a buffoon. He doesn’t think of the consequences. Which can be good. He takes things for as they and - and accounts for his failings. He’s simple and not afraid to break a few rules and certainly not to think.337
Grant:338
You’re rewarding him for inconsistence? Incompetence?339
Manager:340
Nope. Not at all. Innocence. 341
Grant:342
Innocence?343
Manager:344
Brad has that impulse and edge. 345
Grant:346
A sharp edge that could be costly.347
Manager:348
We can grind it off and smooth him out.349
Grant:350
He’s what you’re looking for?351
Manager:352
Yup. And Gary, well he’s our logic man. He’ll take over the bureau and make sure that all Brad’s choices don’t completely ruin us. But he’ll have to abide by Brad’s choices.353
Grant:354
What about me?355
Manager:356
You don’t want to waste this gift you’ve been given do you?357
Grant:358
Gift? No I guess not. 359
Manager:360
Then walk through that door. You can be different. Not stuck fixing someone else’s mistakes like Gary might be doomed to be. You’re different. You won’t be hired as a scapegoat for a failing company or project, Brad’s likely to be imprisoned for something he didn’t do but failed to see it coming or happening. You’re the middle man. Take from that what you like. Make of it what you will. But never underestimate the middle man. Whatever you do. People want to take out the middle man and make it faster, more efficient and cheaper. But at what cost? To cheapen the contacts and procedures? Cut backs aren’t beneficial in every case. Think about that if you think of nothing else. Now, take this candle for example. Pretend it’s your life span or whatever of value. (lights the candle) from there, I want you to blow it out.361
Grant: (trying desperately until he passes out)362
I… can’t.363
Manager:364
I’ll be the middle man. (blows out the candle. The stage gets dark and everything returns to normal) ….365

394

Brad:396
Alright. Let’s talk and think about something else.397
Gary:398
Good idea. What about?399
Enter Grant, confused and he examines the room and the mysterious thing in the centre. He then notices that his 2 best friends are also in the room and this baffles him even more. Grant heads towards the chairs and sits down closest to the door. 400
Grant:401
Hi guys. What’re you doing here?402
Gary:403
True, I was just starting to wonder the same thing. What are the odds all 3 of us end up here today? (laughs nervously)404
Brad: (clueless and talks himself into an uncomfortable situations)405
I saw the add in the paper and thought I would be fun to check out. So I cancelled my plans with you and Gary… (laughs nervously)406
Gary:407
Me too, but I also saw the add on Tv. What about you Grant? Grant? What about you? How’d you end up here? I thought you said you were going biking?408
Grant: 409
It’s funny how life is full of coincidences and circumstances isn’t it? I was just biking around because our plans got cancelled and you nor Brad decided to tell me otherwise. I had to bike over to both your houses only to find that you ditched me to come here.410
Gary:411
What do you mean?412
Grant:413
it is peculiar. After I realized I was on my own today, I found myself biking everywhere and then I saw this new building. Then the billboard and decided to come in and check it out and see what all the fuss was all about. 414
By this time Brad has already gotten up and started playing with the thing in the middle of the room. 415
Brad:416
Hey this thing has buttons!417
Gary:418
You probably shouldn’t touch them.419
Grant:420
Has any one come out from that room yet?421
Gary:422
Nope. Not a word, not a soul, nothing.423
Brad:424
These are really shiny buttons and full of exciting colours! Flashy fun stuff.425
Grant walks over to the door, taps, hears a voice and enters the office alone. Brad and Gary are consumed with the mysterious object in the middle of the room which is just a plain old box with a bunch of buttons and cords that was created as a centrepiece for the room. 426
Exeunt Grant.427
A voice can be heard offstage. 428
Manager:429
I was starting to wonder if anyone was going to come in and if they even read the signs on the wall across from the chair and on the door. . .430

some dynamic energy. id love to see this on stage. the assistants are comic relief and very jester-like. y'know? amazing
-
We....do....not....un-der...stand. funny, though... i especially like brad's obsession with the shiny flashy buttons
sounds like me
. I think Grant was my favorite though, with his being stupid..and yet intelligent at the same time. In case you didn't realize, there are two people commenting on your play... yeah. I find that Brad rather resembles the one who had just written a line, not me..but the other. and now you are probably incurable confused so I will stop typing and click the submit button... after my friend says something...
I must tell you, that we had decided to read your work and we couldn't stop laughing. We also couldn't really understand what the heck was going on, which made it funny obviously. You did have some mistakes, as we are making as well. But now so you do not have to read our rants...we shall go. Farewell to you, and an applause you shall get. -
krista? my name is kryspin. seriously
-
It's really creative... confusing at first but then basically act 4 explained it all... Damn I should've payed attention in english class cause the word i wanna use is forshadowing, but then again I dont think it really firs in.. does it? lol
Good work Kryspin

this is actually a play
-
This was so good!! Creative! I really like the types of personalities you put across here. There are the "thinkers" the "doer's " and the "observer". Excellent read, even though it's abstract, it's really not.... Good luck in the contest!

Hmmm...such a nice piece. This seems like a play, yet could be formed into a musical with the assistants 1 and 2. Well, I think that at the beginning and end, the eithers should be neithers...and when the courtroom is set up, you should change tinks to thinks. Otherwise, I thought that this piece is cool! I also loved how the beginning was just like the ending. Written like a true professional!
Keep up the great work!
