So ;like in psyche this semester we've been talking about statistics and stuff and I got me thinking. Why do we put so much hope on statistics which are really only a mean or mode of a population. It's like taking five people out of the group find the mean of their answers and making a generalization off of that.

Yes!!!! I see your point!! It drives me crazy!!!! They say things like...one out of every five people...when in actuality they have only spoken to five people. ugh.

That would be because seeing people as individuals is far too complex and unrealistic. Viewing them as a standard is easier, makes them organizable, leaves emotional attachment in the toilet so as to not obscure our opinion, and, of course, there's always the fact that there's a base pattern to anyone and everything.
Said pattern may not always keep to the standard, but judging as a group, it generally leaves you with a useful guideline to work off of.
I mean, doing as such does wonders for presidential candidates, tyrants, and the entertainment/commercial industry. It's always a good thing to know just how to manipulate the masses into doing what you want.
