Creak

I awoke gasping for air; once again I had accidently laid my face directly onto my pillow, too tired to know the difference between choking and breathing. Only when my heart began to beat madly in panic did I wake. As I tried to close my eyes, I heard a creaking in the hallway. I remained silent, but heard once more. A steady cracking of floor boards as if someone was pacing back and forth, increasing in speed with every turn. Annoyed, I picked up my sheets and opened the door, ready to yell at my mother for the noise. But the hall was empty and quiet. My dad was away on a business trip, and I could hear the steady breathing of my mother in her room. Confused I closed the door. But as I headed for the bed, the noise started up again. I ran and opened it, quiet. I closed it, and heard running. Open, nothing. Now angry, I slammed the door, not ready to be beaten. Nothing. Satisfied, I went to sleep.
