I actually have a way normal life for a teenager.1
I mean, I get up get, choose what I’m going to wear, and go to school.2
My computer brings up my home screen, then I sit down and click on ‘My Clothes’. It comes up with all my outfits, and you can arrow across the tops and bottoms until you find something you want to wear. I land on a Burberry jacket, yellow cowl neck top underneath, and a matching Burberry mini, with of course, knee-high socks and flats. 3
I go down the marble stairs and pour a drink of fresh orange juice from the fridge, for Daddy, of course. 4
Daddy’s a litigator, that’s the scariest kinds of lawyers. Our maid Lucy is terrified of him and if he’s in the room, she quickly puts up the washing and runs out of there.5
He walks in the kitchen in his suit, all ready for work. “Cher, where’s my briefcase?” He asks me, walking around the marble bench. 6
“Daddy, you know how important your vitamin C is. Here,” I say, picking up the tall glass filled with fresh orange juice, handing it to him. He doesn’t take it. 7
“Your step-brother’s coming over this afternoon.” He tells me. I sigh. “But I hate Josh. He’s annoying,”8
“He’s your step-brother, and he coming over for dinner.” He tells me. 9
Josh is the most annoying 17-year-old I know. I hate it when he comes round. It’s not like this is his house, so why can’t he just stay at his own?10
I sigh and he says, “Don’t tell me those brain-dead cows have called again. I don’t want to call them back,” He says, walking towards the entrance.11
“Well, they are your parents.” I remind him. “Daddy,” He turns. I hold out the orange juice. 12
“Forget it!” He almost yells, walking out. The slightest of things can make him yell, because he’s naturally used to it, being a litigator. 13
I get in the white jeep Daddy got me and drive to Dion’s. She’s my friend because we both know what it’s like to have people jealous of us. 14
Suddenly her front door opens and there she is; a black and white mini, white top and a hat with a flower on it. She poses before getting in the car. “So, what do you think?” She asks, and I start the engine.15
“So cool,” I reply. 16
She suddenly looks back and then at me. “Hellooo, there was a stop sign?”17
“I totally paused!” I say, smiling.18
“Yeah, right.” 19
We walk into school and unfortunately, me and Dion are in totally different form classes, so I say bye to her in the hallway and go into my form.20
“Cher,” Mr. Houston says my name, right after Amber’s on the roll.21
“Present,” I reply.22
He closes the roll book. “Right, let’s start with debates. Amber, you’re up for Against, Cher, you’re up for For.”23
I get up, walking to the left podium and start my speech, smiling at my class. 24
I open the big glass front door and shut them behind me. There’s a picture of my Mom in the entrance, She died when I was just a baby, but I still like to think of her as watching over me.25
I go up to her, smiling, and get out my test results. “Hey Mom, I got 98 for bio, pretty good huh?” I walk up to my room; get changed into a white singlet and a see-through black top over the top, then a black skirt that comes just above my knees. I go into the kitchen and see Josh, raiding the fridge. 26
“Hey,” He says, glancing at me and then back at the fridge. 27
“Hey, dork.” I reply, helping myself to a carrot in a bowl on the marble bench. He turns around, squeezes my waist and says, “Oh, wow, you’re feeling out there.” 28
I turn around. “Oh, wow, your mouth is catching up to your face,”29
“Funny,” He says sarcastically, and we both sit down on the couch in the lounge. I put it on cartoons, and he instantly grabs the remote and changes it to the news.30
“Hey, you just got here and already you’re playing Couch Commandos?” I ask.31
“Hey, in some parts of the world, maybe not in Beverly Hills, but it’s cool to know what’s happening.”32
“Wow, I really need lessons from you on how to be cool,” I say sarcastically.33
Suddenly Daddy yells from the dining room, “Get in here, carrot heads.” We quickly get up.34
I sit down at my usual seat at the big glass table. Daddy looks at Josh.35
“Josh, you still growing? You look taller than I remembered at Easter.”36
Josh sits down. “Uh, I think so,”37
Lucy comes in with the salad, notices Daddy and rushes back out. “Thanks, Lucy,” I say.38
“So, Josh, did you think about what I talked to you about?”39
“Yeah, I’d like to help with the paperwork,” He replies.40
“Good. I don’t want you to have a sad, miserable life,” Daddy says.41
“Oh,” I jump in. “Josh will have that no matter what he does,”42
“At least he knows what he’s doing,” Daddy says to me. “And he goes to a good college. I’d like to see you with a bit of direction,”43
“I have direction,” I say, taking offense.44
Josh looks at me. “Yeah, towards the mall,”45
The next day at school, we have P.E. We have to line up against the mesh fence. It’s tennis; a big machine sits in the middle of the court, and Ms tells us that we just have to hit the balls as fast as they come.46
Amber’s first. “Uh, Mrs. Stoger, my surgeon that says he doesn’t want me to do any kind of activity where balls fly at my nose,” She touches her nose self-consciously.47
Mrs. Stoger sighs. “Fine, Dion, your next.”48
“I have a note that says I shouldn’t do any P.E when I’m getting over a cold,” She says, not moving.49
“Cher, get out here.” 50
I reluctantly walk over to the machine and hold the racquet. The first ball comes flying and just misses my face by an inch.51
“Mrs. Stoger, that machine is dangerous! That could’ve hit anyone in the face!”52
“Thanks for the advice,” She replies sarcastically. “Next!”53
I walk back to Dion. The principal comes up to the courts with a girl, red curly hair, long, slightly baggy pants and a red and white top. She clutches her books and looks around nervously.54
“We have another one, Mrs. Stoger; Tie McDonald.”55
“Okay, thanks.” 56
“Tie, you won’t have time to get dressed now, but you could probably hit a few balls in those clothes,”57
“She could be a farmer in those clothes!” Amber says, laughing.58
“Di, look at her,” I say. 59
“Let’s adopt.” She says. 60
I signal for her to come over here. She looks reliefed that someone wants her to come over. 61
“Hi, are you new?” Di asks, once Tie’s here.62
“Yeah, I moved here last week.”63
“So how do you like California?” I ask, smiling.64
“It’s so cool, and this school is awesome!”65
“I’m Dion by the way, and this is Cher,”66
“Hi, I’m Tie.”67
“Well, we have lunch in ten minutes, sit with us.” I suggest.68
“Really? You guys want me to? Because I don’t really know anyone else,”69
I look at Tie, her eyebrows raised in surprise, her hair in a loose pony and her books about to fall out of her hands. I nod enthusiastically. “Sure! Can I hold your books? You’ve got heaps,”70
“Why do you have books for P.E?” Di asks as Tie gives me some of her books.71
“Oh, I didn’t know I’d have P.E first, I only got my timetable just now and I didn’t read it straight away because the principal said she’d just show me now,”72
Dion nods and the bell rings. As we walk to me and Di’s usual table, I have an idea. “Tie! Me and Di should give you a makeover!” When Di hears this, her eyes light up and we both look at Tie excitedly. 73
“Are you sure?” She says, hesitant. We both nod.74
“Uh…ok, why not?”75
We dye Tie’s hair a lighter red, like an orangey red and cut it so it’s up to her shoulders. We make it a bit more wavy than curly. We go shopping with her, choosing her new outfits, and she poses in them at the shop, then we tell her if we like it or not. 76
The next day at school, Tie’s wearing one of her many new outfits and her new hair. Even more heads turn than they normally do when it’s just me and Dion. People so wouldn’t have turned if Tie looked like she did yesterday…no offense.77
“See, Tie? Now people are totally looking at you,” I explain.78
“Wow, guys, this is so cool, I’ve never had a makeover done and have never had so many heads turn!”79
“Have you had any heads turn?” Dion says under her breath. Luckily Tie doesn’t hear but I do, and nudge her.80
“You see that guy?” I ask, pointing to Elton, a guy in my class that is totally hot, but not my type.81
“Yeah,” Tie says, looking in his direction.82
“Well, I saw him looking at you before. He’s in my form, so if you like him, I could totally get you too together,” I suggest.83
She looks at me. “Would you? You’re the nicest friends ever!”84
“There’s a party on tonight,” Elton tells me. “You should come.”85
“Oh, I used to go to those parties but you know, with the cops always coming, I stopped. I don’t think I’ll go,” I reply, sitting down. He sits behind me in form so I turn around so I can still talk to him.86
“Oh, yeah, but this one will be different, promise.” He says.87
I think about the pros and cons of going.88
Pros:89
I get to dance (which I haven’t done in a long time)90
Buy a new outfit91
Tie can go to her first Beverly Hills party92
I could find a guy there93
If we don’t like it we can always go back to my house or Di’s.94
Cons:95
o The cops could come and break it all up (we wouldn’t get any time for dancing or guy-scoping)96
o Amber could show up wearing the same dress as me (like last time)97
o It might be boring98
o I might get something spilt on my possible dress99
Since I have more reasons to go than not go, I say, “Well, Okay.” He smiles.100
At the end of class, I call Di and Tie, telling them about the party. It’s in the valley, about 20 minutes from home.101
When we get there, it’s crowded. We have to push past people to get to the main room, which is even harder to move in.102
Tie and me both look around for Elton, while Dion goes off to find her boyfriend, Murray.103
“He’s over there, Tie!” I say, noticing the brown-haired boy dancing with some friends.104
“Do you think he’ll see me?” Tie asks, turning to me.105
“Definitely, come on.” I say, pulling her to the middle of the crowd.106
We start dancing, and I glance over at Elton every now and again to see if he’s looking at Tie, he suddenly looks up, and sees us. I pretend not to see him and we keep dancing.107
