The night was still and silent, but something was different. Old Poppy, an old bull dog could scent the scaly, slimy scent sitting vaguely in the warm summer air.
Suddenly, a blast of movement came from the other side of the field. Scaly, reptile dogs crept out from the bushes, blue tongues hanging out of their mouths and sharp teeth glinting in the moonlight. Old Poppy yelped and ran into his den, blocking the entrance with dirt.
But the strange creatures already smelt the dog, and started their way through the field. Their red and green scales cast a light on the ground, almost like a flashlight, and their beady yellow eyes were so bright, that they could blind you.
Finally, they reached the old den. The lead dog protracted one long, glimmering claw, and dug it into the dirt. He pulled it out, bringing a huge clump of dirt out. After four scoops, the entrance to the den was open.
One of the reptile dogs slivered into the warm, stuffy den, looking for the old dog. Tonight, they would feast.
Meanwhile, Old Poppy crouched in his room, in one of his closets the monkey made. Luckily, it was attached to the wall, and there was a hole in the dirt behind him, so if these creatures found him, he would dart up the tunnel and up to the ground.
The reptile dog paused. He smelt the old dog in his room, crouching and ready to run. He slapped his tail against the dirt, signaling for his companions to get into position.
The creature slipped into the room, and extended a claw. He hooked it around the handle to the closet, and slowly opened it.
Old Poppy let out a yelp of fear, surprise, and pain as he went blind, the creature's bright eyes killing his. But the old dog darted up the tunnel, and made it to ground level.
Too late.
The creatures were already there, and the lead creature pinned Old Poppy down, growling in his face. His pack crouched, ready to dig into the meal.
Old Poppy closed his eyes as the lead creature neared his face, his metallic breath filling his nostrils and causing a sick feeling to course through him. The old dog was paralyzed.
"The Varajaks have come!" exclaimed the lead Varajak, as they tore the old dogs body apart and feasted the first meal on this planet.
But not the last.
