Kalima Rewrite

Chapter One1

I followed Drake into the dimly lit bedroom at the far end of the house. My hopes were high at the thoughts and expectations of what I wanted most. 2

Him.3

I frowned and stopped in the doorway, watching him slowly sit on the bed and motion me closer. I did as was told and followed his footprints to stand before him at the edge of the bed, his eyes gazing into mine with a ferocious intensity. I took a gasping breath, my hand reaching out to touch the dark silky hair framing his face, all the while wondering what I was doing here, and trying to remember something important wavering on the edge of my subconscious mind. I paused as something like ice water it hit me. Subconscious mind.4

I awoke suddenly, a scream lodged in the back of my throat as I sat up panting heavily. Smacking a hand to my forehead I forced myself to calm down and take deep relaxing breaths. I should have known it was a dream from the beginning. Taking one last deep breath I sunk backwards into my pillows letting them consume me. Risking a glance at the clock I let out a moan of frustration spotting it was only five twenty in the morning. I lay silently for a few minutes before hearing quiet laughter coming from the next room, making me think over what just played in my mind. Feeling anger well inside me I realized that the dream hadn’t put itself inside my head on it’s own. Drake was my house mate, along with his two friends Saffron and Liander. We rarely got along in the small house all four of us occupied, mainly because I was the only woman in the house hold and because Drake had liked me ever since he laid eyes on me. 5

Flinging back the covers of my bed I knocked Clayton my black cat off my bed, His muffled protests dying quickly as I picked up my black bathrobe off my chair and flung it around myself, all the while strolling towards the door. Pulling it open I once again regretted the decision to move in with Drake. I didn’t have much of a choice when I was younger; he had found me at the age of ten walking on the streets after my parents had kicked me out of the house. It was a depressing story telling Drake why they had kicked me out, but I knew he would listen to me having the same problem I did. I was a vampyre, one of very few in the city. Drake, Liander and Saffron were also vampyre, and needless to say after learning that fact I decided to join them having nowhere else to go. A coven was the word Drake had used to describe our small group of four as he tried to explain to me he could be trusted whilst walking through the dark backstreets. I still wasn’t sure how I became a vampyre as I was never bitten and my parents were human. The only conclusion I could come up with was that I was adopted or swapped at birth. 6

Walking down the dark hallway I paused in front of Drakes room, hesitating only an instant before my foot struck out to break the door from its hinges, a loud crack sure enough to wake the dead echoing around the house. Taking a step forwards to stand just inside the doorway I stopped to take in his room. My eyes glanced over his desk and bookshelf in the far corner of his room to his dark oak chest at the foot of the bed. “Drake, get up.” My voice was as smooth as silk but held the promise of venom in the depths as my eyes found him lying in bed, the blankets pulled up around his neck. I waited a few seconds before the blankets moved and Drake rolled over onto his side, his eyes open a crack to watch me. I could see his grin from the far side of the room, making the anger pool inside my head, my cheeks turning red with embarrassment. Drake moved his long black hair from his emerald eyes and yawned. “Why Kalima, it’s a pleasure to have you in my domain at this time of morning. What can I do for you?” 7

Walking gracefully towards his bed I loomed over him, my eyes a blazing red as I pulled the sheets back from his bed in an angry movement. “Get up”8

He rolled onto his back grinning up at me, his teeth a dazzling white as his eyes held his playful mood. “Wouldn’t you rather join me?”9

“No” My words came out as cold as steel before I jumped, my hands pinning both his shoulders to the back of the bed head, my face an inch from his. “I know what you did Drake and I swear if I so much as smell you in me dreams…” I let the threat waver out, my canines elongating in threat. The look Drake gave me was one of innocence and deviance and as he grinned I noticed his own canines growing longer. Being older then I Drake was stronger and more powerful, which meant I wouldn’t stand a chance against him in a battle. He was almost a master vampyre but I knew he would never hurt me. “I look forward to your threat Kalima, but are you sure you wouldn’t rather play now?”10

I let Drake go before sauntering out the room, stepping over his broken door. Ignoring his incompetence I headed for my room and the shower. It was still early yet but I knew sleep wouldn’t come again for some time. After he stopped to inspect his own door, Drake’s quiet footsteps followed me hurriedly to my room. I slammed the door in his face as he was about to enter and locked it, leaning my back against it. 11

“Let me in Kalima, you know a door will not stop me as you demonstrated so easily yourself.”12

I snorted and walked towards my mahogany dresser. “But if you were as civilized as you make people believe you would give me privacy.” As I opened my top drawer I heard Drakes long drawn out sigh from the other side of the door. “I’ll see you downstairs Kalima.”13

I didn’t answer and as he walked away I pulled out a long sleeved shirt and a pair of tattered jeans. I carefully shut the draw, not wanting to dent the perfect wood with my anger and prowled towards the shower. I love my showers as much as I love blood and hoped that it would do well to take one now whilst I was so wound up. I picked up my rose scented shower gel from under the sink and placed it on the shower frame before placing my towel closer, making the trip to reach it at the end that much easier.14

Hearing Kalima turn on the shower I walked back to my bedroom, picking up my door now lying in splinters on the floor and placing it out the way against the wall. I still didn’t understand Kalima; she wasn’t distressed when I started the dream. I walked over to my four poster bed and propped the pillows up before sitting against them and checking the alarm clock beside the bed, my face turning twisted as I notice it’s only five forty. Excellent, nothing like an early start to the day. I thought sarcastically. Feeling around for the remote above the duvet I flicked on the TV and went through the channels. “Static, commercials, sport, news……news?”16

I sit up straighter as a picture of Moonlit Manor appears on the screen. Turning up the volume so I can hear I frown. 17

“Raaksha’s place, what is it doing on TV” 18

Saffron and Liander chose that moment to bound into the room, like the idiots they are. Saffron had a black scarf wound tight around his neck and Liander held a football. “Man what happened to your door?” Saffron said as he went to examine the splintered wood. I rolled my eyes, I knew they had heard but chose to be polite. Liander stood in front of the TV blocking my view. “Liander move, you’re not a window.”19

Liander scoffed and moved forwards till he looked me in the eyes. “Let’s go play football, you look tense.” 20

I sighed in frustration as Saffron joined Liander’s side. Knowing trying to get them to move I sighed and flicked off the TV. “It’s six in the morning.”21

“Yea so? Perfect time for football.” 22

Liander’s grin ticked me off and I smacked the football out of his hand as he spun it. “I don’t want to play football.”23

I stood up and walked to the plain black curtains pulling them open only slightly to peer into the meadow. The sun hadn’t appeared just yet, but the yellow hue coming over the hills told me it was close. Letting the curtains fall back into place I slowly turned around. “Anyone up for breakfast?”24
