The Proud Environmentalist

Lucy Spencer was an environmentalist, and a pompous one at that. 5

Lucy had been born to help the environment. It was her destiny, and she was determined to fulfill it. It was not just her desire; fate had prompted her to do so since the very beginning. She was born on April 6 of 2045, the fateful yet tragic day when millions lost their lives in California, after the methane level from farts increased dramatically, suffocating an entire population of people. She had been born on a day when the government learned a lesson: anyone that ate more than twenty beans a day was to be eradicated – mercilessly if need be. 6

Since she was three, Lucy had been an avid contributor to cleaning the environment. She took her potty breaks at exactly six in the evening, to add to the millions of other flushes that helped push turbines to produce electricity in the sewers. She had become a strict vegan, never eating anything more than rice and vegetables and labeling, stereotyping, catcalling and even hissing at meat-eaters (the Constitution did not prohibit discrimination for eating habits). Lucy had supported and voted ‘yes’ on Article 88, licensing American civilians to shoot-at-sight any Chinese (or other resembling Asians) in intimate romance (everyone knew they were to blame for the population expansion crisis). 7

Yes, Lucy Spencer was very proud to be helping the Earth.8

One day, when Lucy opened her door to charge the batteries of her car, she saw a little pamphlet hanging on the doorknob. 12

Oh no, not another Thai restaurant menu, she thought clicking her tongue in disgust. But to her relief it was not that. No. It was an opportunity to help the environment. 13

    Hahahahahahaha

That is the first story, since I've been here, that I've laughed out loud to . That was hilarious. Brilliant topic and very witty. I would've never thought to use such a topic for humour. But the mutilating boys scared me a little, lol thank God that doesn't happen Seriously though, fantastic job, hope you win in your contests

    I Literally LOL'd.

LOL! I literally laughed out loud on several different occasions while reading this humerous tale. The ending would have to by my favourite, and the bulletin for "Marcy's Snip N' Nip Clinic", was purely hillarious!

I can't tell if this is a vague poke at WHO or at the sexual prowess of Asians...

I'm just saying, don't be jealous of Asians.

    Good satire though. Poor kids...

Nicely done! The flyer had me chuckling, but the sudden surprise of Californicide-by-fart made me burst out laughing!

The Snoopy-shaped ice pack...oh geez. Oh my. I wince and shudder! Probably since I'm a mom of a boy. Lucy better watch out; those boys will poison her tea and claim it's a benefit to the environment to have one less mouth.

Great entry, definitely a finalist. The hissing at meat-eaters made me lol: I'm vegetarian. But I'm a polite one. I don't hiss or anything.

Good job there! Funny, funny... a touch of disturbing, but Queen Betkins II doesn't really mind that. Good work! Keep it up!

  • not bad at all.. nice humour.. lucy is perhaps a tad unbelieveable, but generally she fits in with the gist of the piece.. keep it up

  • Who wants to go to Disney Land?

That was desturbingly good. I loved it!

I must say, I'm a girl, and that made me feel uncomfortable.

I like this; I like this a lot
It has a good beginning, middle and end. The idea of the flyer had me in stitches and the fact that Cali had been more or less wiped out because of people farting is hysterical in the extreme. It's damn lucky for the world as a whole that you didn't think of cows blowing off methane

This is an excellent write; it's up there with the best of them. Long live Satire!

    Well done

You say this is your first attempt at Satire?

Quite honest, you seem to be a natural at it. This was humorous and I enjoyed reading it. The flow was natural and smooth and light. It was well edited, also

I'm female, and even that idea puts pain in me. But, its funny, nonetheless.
I liked how you already detailed Lucy and worked through her character.

Loved how you started this, too:

She was born on April 6 of 2045, the fateful yet tragic day when millions lost their lives in California, after the methane level from farts increased dramatically, suffocating an entire population of people.

    that's great!

This really was an enjoyable read and I think you're going to do great in the Satire genre

    beginning: 5, language: 5, plot: 5, ending: 5, characters: 5.

  • That was pretty...epic! Nice work with it. We spent a whole semester on satire and even to my still stubbornly untrained eyes, this definately seemed like satire.

Ever read the Princess Bride? They use that at most highschools to describe the style. Give it a go if you haven't and want to continue with this. I'm sure it'll help. Okay, not sure but maybe.

    Love,
    Paper.thin.paradox

    Interesting piece.

I think that this is definitely satire, but some of the humor is lost in its extremes.

The flyer was the best part, but it seems that if Lucy had permitted herself to have children, assuming she had the freedom of choice demonstrated in what she was prepared to do to her twins, she'd likely want her kids to continue the family line.
